Does New Akan Hotel allow tattoos? Yes!

Called directly in September 2026: there is no restriction at all. Tattoos are fully allowed in both the rooftop Tenku Garden Spa and the large baths Unkai and Tenbu, with nothing to cover. The bathing-garment rule for the Garden Spa is a swimsuit requirement, not a tattoo rule, and it does not change this answer.

Where it is

Sapporo is the door to all of these. Asahikawa is 1 h 25 on the Kamui limited express, Obihiro 2 h 42 on the Tokachi and Kushiro 4 h 04 on the Ozora; buses carry on from there to Sounkyo, Asahidake, Tokachigawa, Lake Akan and Utoro. Closer in, Noboribetsu Onsen is about 1 h 45: the Suzuran, JR’s limited express (a faster train with fewer stops and a fee on top of the fare), then a Donan bus of 21 minutes up to the onsen terminal. Toyako Onsen is the Hokuto, the limited express to Hakodate, as far as Toya, then a Donan bus of 24 minutes around the lake, about 2 h 20 in all. Niseko is about 3 h 25 by way of Otaru and Kutchan, or a direct highway coach for less money. Jozankei has no railway: the Jotetsu Kappa Liner runs there from Sapporo Station in 56 minutes and is booked in advance. Otaru is 35 minutes on the Rapid Airport, Lake Shikotsu a bus from New Chitose Airport, and Hakodate 3 h 50 on the Hokuto. JR Hokkaido Rail Pass Five, seven or ten days of unlimited JR trains on the island, which covers the Ozora limited express from Sapporo to Kushiro. The Akan Bus from Kushiro to the lake, 2,750 yen, is paid separately. Sold on Klook.

Best for: The rooftop Tenku Garden Spa over Lake Akan and the large baths Unkai and Tenbu, with no restriction on any of them.

The garment rule applies to the rooftop Garden Spa only, not to the ninth-floor large baths Unkai (men) and Tenbu (women), which run around the clock apart from a 9:00–12:00 cleaning break and are unstaffed 0:00–5:00. The Garden Spa runs 5:00–23:00 with the same cleaning break. No private bath and no room bath are published. Third-party pages had disagreed about the hotel’s tattoo rule before this call settled it.
