Does Bosenkan allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

The Shikisai rooms put their open-air tubs right over the Hida river, close enough to watch the trains cross the iron bridge from the water, and the three Sansuitei cottages sit apart in the garden with tubs of their own.

Bosenkan publishes no tattoo rule at all, for the shared baths or anywhere else, so the shared baths stay an unknown. What it does publish is a reservable open-air bath and two kinds of room with their own bath, and those are answers a tattooed guest can rely on without asking anyone.

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site — bath structure, not a tattoo policy (bosenkan.co.jp/onsen/ and /room/). The inn publishes nothing about tattoos either way.

Best for: A river-facing open-air bath of your own for 45 minutes, free on weekdays when booked direct

The reservable open-air bath is 2,200 yen for 45 minutes per room, booked same-day at the desk on a first-come basis, and the inn’s own booking privilege makes it free on weekdays and half price on Saturdays. It is for overnight guests only; day visitors cannot use it. Rooms with their own open-air bath: the Shikisai riverside rooms, in Japanese style with a ceramic tub or Western style with a maki-wood tub and step-free access, and the three Sansuitei cottages in the garden. Baths are closed for cleaning around 03:00 to 03:30.
