Hita Onsen Kizantei Hotel
日田温泉 亀山亭ホテル
Does Hita Onsen Kizantei Hotel allow tattoos? Yes, covered
Kizantei, founded in 1874 as a restaurant and on the Mikuma riverbank since 1959, fills the bath of every room with its own hot spring, and its premium rooms soak you in a Shigaraki-ware tub at the window.
Kizantei’s FAQ lets tattooed guests into the large bath and asks them to cover the tattoo with a seal out of consideration for others, naming no size. The bath in every room uses hot spring water, and two private baths can be reserved for 50 minutes for a fee.

The bath
The spring rises on the hotel's own grounds and goes into the baths with no water added. The hotel describes it as an alkaline simple spring, smooth on the skin and easy on the body, and says Hita's water has long been known as a spring for couples hoping for children. The two large baths are on the eighth floor, each with an open-air bath beside it behind glass, facing the Mikuma river and the hills of the Hita basin; the hotel says the sunsets from here have no equal in Hita Onsen. One side has a dry sauna with loyly and a cold bath, so men and women swap sides between night and morning. There is also a cypress open-air bath above the river. Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight and 6 to 10 a.m.
The room baths are the answer for a tattooed guest. The hotel says every room's bath uses hot spring water. The Premium Twin rooms have a round Shigaraki-ware tub of flowing spring water at a window that opens, looking over the river. The Superior Twin rooms and the Premium Japanese-Western rooms 601, 701 and 702 have a view bath facing the river too.
Two private baths, Gion-no-yu and Kagetsu-no-yu, are for staying guests only and take up to four people. Each costs ¥2,000 for 50 minutes, in seven sittings from 3:30 to 9:50 p.m.
The hotel
Kizantei began in 1874 as a restaurant at the foot of Kizan Park, opened as a hotel on the Mikuma riverbank in 1959, and finished a full renovation in March 2024 that added new rooms and the sauna. Rooms run from 8-mat and 10-mat Japanese rooms facing the river to city-view twins, a step-free universal room, and the view-bath twins and suites. Dinner can be served in the room looking at the river, or in summer on a yakatabune, a roofed pleasure boat, during the cormorant fishing. Breakfast is 7 to 9 a.m.
