Does Suichokan allow tattoos? In a private bath
Suichokan publishes no tattoo rule, so book its private hot-spring bath, free for staying guests for 60 minutes. It’s a women-only inn for guests 13 and over.
None of the inn’s pages mentions tattoos. The group’s Kyujitsu-yu bathhouse, which Suichokan guests can visit free, turns tattooed bathers away.
The bath
The private natural bath is a hinoki (Japanese cypress) tub in a fully enclosed room, on free-flowing water straight from the source. Staying guests reserve it for 60 minutes at no charge. Face towels, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, skin care, a hair dryer and hairbrushes are provided. The rock sauna (ganban-yoku, three heated stone beds) is also free for 60 minutes by reservation.
The water is a blend of the Daiichi group’s three springs, which rise from the bed of the Toyohira river at an average of about 69°C (156°F).
The large bath has hinoki tubs, a lukewarm meditation bath and a gentle, tiered sauna, open 3 p.m. to 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. These are shared baths with no published tattoo rule. The group’s detached bathhouse, Morino-yu, at Jozankei Daiichi Hotel Suizantei, can also be rented by one party, 3 p.m. to 5 a.m., for ¥4,400 per 60 minutes. It has no washing area.
The hotel
Three room types, all facing Mount Yuhi: a 36-square-meter twin, a 42-square-meter deluxe twin and a 42-square-meter Japanese-style room for up to five. Check-in is 3 p.m. and checkout 11 a.m. Meals are served in the dining room, not in your room. Two parking lots, by the entrance and diagonally across the street, are free, and so is Wi-Fi.
Good to know
- No elevator. Stairs link the two floors and the basement large bath, and the inn isn’t accessible. Staff will help with steps if you ask.
- No day bathing. The baths are for staying guests only.
Getting there
Jozankei Onsen Higashi 2-chome STN · Jotetsu Bus Jozankei line
The inn’s own stop is Daiichi Hotel-mae.
From New Chitose Airport, take the JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo, about 40 minutes. Change to the Namboku subway line for Makomanai, about 25 minutes, then take the Jotetsu bus to Jozankei, about 1 hour, and get off at Daiichi Hotel-mae. The group’s free Yukemuri-go shuttle bus leaves Odori Nishi 5-chome, outside the Showa Building at exit 1 of Odori subway station, at 11:30 a.m. and at 2:40 and 5 p.m.; for the 2:40 bus, meet at 2:30 p.m. It leaves the inn for the return at 10:20 a.m. and 12:50 p.m. Book it with the online form by 7 p.m. the day before; seats are limited.
