Does Oyado Yukimiso allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Yukimiso stands alone in the trees outside Nagayu with its own spring at 46.6°C, seven garden-facing rooms and a dining room whose chef plants the vegetables he serves.

Yukimiso publishes no tattoo rule. It keeps a family bath that only staying guests may use, so a tattooed guest can bathe privately instead of in the men’s or women’s bath.

The bath

Yukimiso has its own source, a carbon dioxide-bearing magnesium and sodium bicarbonate spring at 46.6°C, run straight through every tub. The inn explains that Nagayu once fizzed like soda where the water came up cool; its own spring is hot, so the gas stays dissolved and you will see no bubbles. It lists the water for chronic rheumatism, skin trouble and eczema, nerve paralysis, digestive complaints, cold sensitivity, stiff shoulders, bruised joints and fatigue. The men's and women's baths each have an indoor tub and an open-air tub facing the woods, open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the inn suggests the open-air tub for the night sky.

The family bath is for staying guests only; day visitors use the shared baths. The inn's photo shows a long tub with a rim of pale stone, walls of red cedar and a window onto green woods, with a separate washing corner. It gives no hours or fee, so ask at check-in how to reserve it.

The hotel

Seven Japanese rooms, all looking onto a garden the owner made: two standard 10-mat rooms with a sitting corner, two with a veranda over the garden, two with a garden deck, and a 12-mat room for families. Each has its own toilet and washbasin. The lobby rises to the roof and has a wood stove in winter. Dinner is a creative kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) at partitioned tables, cooked by an owner trained in Kansai restaurants, with vegetables from the inn's own field and the morning's rolled omelet cooked to order. Check-in from 3 p.m., check-out by 10 a.m.

Good to know

Getting there

The inn's route by public transport: the JR Hohi line from Oita to Bungo-Taketa, then the Taketa Kotsu bus to the Nagayu Onsen garage stop. The inn picks up there, and warns that trains and buses are few, so plan the connection. It gives no minutes for the bus.
