A bath you book by the slot and take by yourself: the reservable open-air bath — the ryokan calls it 山の隠れ湯, the hidden bath in the hills — is two or three minutes up a gravel path from the guest wing, and costs 3,000 yen plus tax for forty-five minutes at one of ten set times through the day. Several rooms have an open-air bath of their own instead. Nothing to cover either way.

The water is a weak natural radium spring, and the baths run from three in the afternoon until ten the next morning. The ryokan publishes no tattoo rule either way, on any page read. In a bath you take by yourself that question does not arise — but do not read the silence as permission for the large bath. One telephone call would settle that. The pick-up from JR Kameoka station runs at set times and has to be booked.
