Does Hoshino Resorts KAI Yufuin allow tattoos? Yes!
KAI Yufuin stands in terraced rice fields that change color through the year, and the operator sells the open-air bath on the view of Mount Yufu above them. It is also the one address in Yufuin whose operator has written down where it stands on tattoos.
Hoshino Resorts is the only operator in Yufuin that answers the question in writing, and its answer is that it does not restrict guests with tattoos. It keeps a discretion clause: if staff judge that other guests may be frightened, they may refuse the onsen or large bath. The cover-seal condition in the same answer applies to properties open to non-guests, and KAI baths are for overnight guests only, so there is nothing here to buy or stick on. Read the group answer as a yes with a caveat rather than a guarantee.
The bath
Two baths, both for people staying the night, on a simple spring the resort says is rich in the metasilicic acid that turns up in cosmetics and mild enough to sit in for a long time. It labels the water source-fed with some added. The indoor bath is split in two, a hot tub running from the source and a cooler one to stay in; outside, the open-air bath has a lying bath along one side so you can lie with your head up and look out over the terraces.
Afterwards there is a room to sit in over the fields, with drinks and ice pops the bath keeper picks locally. The resort also runs a session it calls Onsen Bunka Iroha, part quiz on how Yufuin’s water works and part making a scented sachet from the forest the spring rises in.
Several room types have an open-air bath of their own, facing the woods rather than the mountain, and one of them is the dog room, a single room that takes up to two large dogs. The rest of the forty-five rooms use the shared baths.
The hotel
The building copies a farmhouse, with a long eave and an engawa under it to sit on and look at the terraced rice fields, which change with the planting year. The local room is Hotarukago-no-ma, lit through shades woven from shichitoi, a rush grown on the Kunisaki peninsula, meant to suggest fireflies over water. Dinner is a kaiseki built on game and mountain vegetables. Check-in 14:30, check-out 11:00, parking free.
What is good about it
- Both baths are for overnight guests only, so there is nothing to buy on a day trip and no cover seal to ask about.
- Two indoor tubs, one hot and one cool, and a lying bath outdoors facing Mount Yufu.
- The shuttle closes four days out, booked by 18:00 on the fourth day before you arrive.
Getting there
The free shuttle leaves JR Yufuin STN at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00 from the tourist information center next door, and must be booked by 18:00 four days ahead. Back the other way it runs five times between 8:30 and 11:00. A taxi is about 10 minutes.

The same FAQ says the onsen and large baths at Hoshinoya, KAI and Risonare are for overnight guests only and cannot be used on a day trip, which is why the group’s cover-seal clause does not apply here.
