Does Yufuin Bettei Itsuki allow tattoos? In a private bath
Every room at Itsuki is a separate building with its own hot spring, and which kind you get depends on which plant name is on the door. The operator’s phrase for it is 全室専用温泉付き, a private bath in all fourteen.
There is no shared bath to be turned away from. The operator says all fourteen rooms across thirteen cottages come with their own hot spring, some open-air, some half-open-air, some indoors, so the only person who sees your skin is whoever you brought. No tattoo rule is published, and none is needed to book and bathe.
The bath
The spring is a simple one, and what the operator claims for it is that you can sit in it a long time without tiring, which is the reason it gives for leaving the room baths running around the clock. Most cottages pair an indoor tub with a half-open-air one: Karin, Sazanka, Yamamomo, Yamabuki, Sakura, Kodemari and Anzu all work that way, and Anzu looks at Mount Yufu from the window with its living room and terrace a story below the entrance. Utsugi sets a cypress indoor tub against a ceramic half-open-air one. Mokuren’s half-open-air bath is cut rock, the only one here. Tsubaki and Hanamizuki are fully open to the air, Hanamizuki with a shallow lying bath the operator says is safe for small children.
Three are exceptions. Yamaboushi has the half-open-air bath and nothing indoors. Ajisai has only an indoor tub, and the operator says it is also the largest bathroom on the property. The special room Yuzen trades the outdoors for a rock-walled indoor bath and a ganbanyoku stone-heat room, which it says few places in Yufuin have. There is no shared bathhouse anywhere on the site, and out among the trees in the garden there is a free foot bath.
The hotel
Thirteen cottages hold fourteen rooms, each different in layout, design and building material. Check-in is 15:00 and the last one accepted is 18:00; check-out is 11:00. Dinner is at 18:00 or 19:00 and breakfast at 8:00, 8:30 or 9:00, all of it booked by the day before. The cellar holds about 60 wines, mostly French with some local bottles. Parking is free, fifteen spaces, no reservation.
What is good about it
- Twelve of the fourteen rooms open to the outside, while Ajisai has an indoor tub only and Yuzen a stone-heat room instead.
- Room baths run 24 hours, on a simple spring the operator says will not tire you out.
- No shuttle bus, but a taxi ticket, handed over at the desk for the ride back to the station.
Getting there
Twenty minutes on foot from Yufuin STN, or five by car. The ryokan runs no shuttle: it asks guests to take a taxi and tell the driver Yufuin Bettei Itsuki, and gives round-trip taxi tickets, the return one handed over at check-out.
