Does Hamada Onsen allow tattoos? Yes!
Salt water that holds its heat, in a single-storey building designed so that a wheelchair can reach the tub. The 1935 bathhouse it replaced was kept and now stands across the road as a museum.
Kamegawa’s municipal bath is marked tattoo-friendly in the city’s own facility data, refreshed to June 2026, and it sits in the public-bath group on the city’s 2026 tattoo map. Beppu City is the operator, so that is the operator’s answer. Sodium chloride water, one shared room per sex, nothing to cover.
The bath
Sodium chloride water, piped in and run through a single tub. The bathing room and the changing room are one space in the old manner, so you undress at the edge of the tiles with the water in front of you.
The 2002 building is a single-story reinforced concrete hall in Japanese dress, and it was built wide on purpose. Corridors take a wheelchair, there is no step between the road and the water, the tub and the changing area carry rails, and a wheelchair built for the bathing room waits by the door to change into. Nothing else is laid on: soap, shampoo, towels and the dryer are all paid extras at the counter.
Open 06:30 to 22:30, closed 14:00 to 15:00 for cleaning and on the first Thursday. Adults 200 yen, children 100, and the 1,800-yen ten-ticket book also works at Tano-yu, Hamawaki and Nagaishi. Twenty-eight free parking spaces, which is more than any other city bath in the center of town has.

Getting there
In Kamegawa, up the coast from Beppu: three minutes on foot from JR Kamegawa STN. Buses 6, 23, 26 and 50 from either exit of Beppu Station reach the Kamegawa-eki stop in 19 to 30 minutes depending on the route.
Beppu STN · JR Nippo line; the Sonic limited express runs in from Hakata
Not a walk: 5.6 km up the coast, so take the train or the bus.
JR Kamegawa STN is 3 minutes away on foot. Buses 6, 23, 26 and 50 stop at Kamegawa-eki.
