Does Kiyosen allow tattoos? Yes!
Buried by disaster in the middle ages, dug out again in Meiji, and grand enough by the 1930s that its bath hall was called the thousand-person bath. The 2016 rebuild works turtle shells into the detailing, for the Kame in Kamegawa.
City-owned, city-run, and marked tattoo-friendly in the city’s own facility data as of June 2026. The 2026 map Beppu publishes for tattooed visitors lists Kiyosen under public baths. Two tubs, hot and warm, both shared and both open to you.
The bath
Two tubs, an atsu-yu and a nuru-yu, on a simple spring that comes from the source, passes through the room and goes. The 2016 rebuild was done with hospitality as the stated brief, which in practice means a multipurpose toilet, rails on the tub, two wheelchairs on hand and a bathing room a wheelchair can be pushed into.
What stood here before was a great deal grander. The Taisho building had a waterfall bath, a sand bath and a plain bath on the ground floor with a rest room and a restaurant above; the rebuild that followed in the early Showa years was large enough to be called the thousand-person bath. The hall on the second floor now belongs to the neighborhood association.
Hours are 06:30 to 22:30 with an hour out from 14:00 for cleaning, and the bath shuts on the first Wednesday of the month. Adults 250 yen, children 100, with a ten-ticket book at 2,250 yen that also works at Kaimon-ji and Furosen. Towels, soap and the dryer all cost extra at the counter. Parking for five.
What is good about it
- Hot and warm tubs, one of them wheelchair accessible, with two wheelchairs kept in the building.
- The newest of the city’s baths, reopened in July 2016 on a site worked since Meiji.
- 2,250 yen for ten entries, good here, at Kaimon-ji and at Furosen.
Getting there
In the middle of the old spa quarter at Kamegawa, 5.2 km up the coast, so take the bus: 16, 23 or 26 from JR Beppu STN to the Kiyosen or Kamegawa Kiyosen-mae stop, twenty to thirty minutes depending on the route.
