Hakone-Yumoto Day-use onsen

Hakone Yuryo

箱根湯寮

Nothing to cover

You can use the bath with your tattoos visible. Nothing to cover, no size limit, and nothing to declare at the desk.

Fully OK — no restrictions in any bath area (policy lifted Apr 1, 2025)

The only one in Hakone we can show you in writing

Hakone is a resort onsen town, and the rule has historically been firmest in exactly these places. Six other properties in the area are listed as tattoo-friendly by directories, and they appear on our Hakone page with an Unverified badge — but not one of them publishes a policy on its own site, and three trace back to a single competing directory rather than to any operator. This is the one in Hakone where the operator says it, so this is the one with a page. The date is worth noting too: the restriction came off on 1 April 2025, which is recent enough that older guidebooks and forum posts still describe the opposite.

What happens when you arrive

There is nothing to do. Check in, go to the bath. No seal to buy, no measuring, no declaration to make, and no size at which it stops being allowed. If a member of staff does query it, the operator’s own wording is above — showing it ends the conversation without either of you needing the other’s language.

Where this sits

Hakone is a resort onsen town, where the rule has historically been firmest. What works here is mostly private bathing; a listing that takes tattoos in a shared bath is the exception rather than the pattern.
