Does Hakone Yuryo allow tattoos? Yes!
Tattoos are welcome in every bath area, with nothing to cover. The bathhouse lifted its restriction on April 1, 2025.
The bathhouse lifted its tattoo rule and says so on its own site, with no size limit and no conditions attached.
The bath
The water is Tonosawa Onsen, one of the old Seven Springs of Hakone: a mild spring the house calls soft on the skin. It runs partly free-flowing and partly circulated and filtered, is chlorinated as the law requires, and has water added at busy times when the supply can't keep up. No bath salts go in. The main bathhouse, Honden Yurakuan Oyu, which the operator says looks out over wooded countryside, has an indoor bath, a rock bath, a view bath called Miharashi-yu, a stream-water bath, Shigaraki pottery tubs, and a sauna called Netsu no Muro.
The 19 private open-air rooms, Hanare Yuya Kaden, come in three sizes: seven for up to two people at 18 m², eight for up to four at 24 m², and four at 32 m². Two hours costs ¥10,400, ¥12,400 or ¥14,400 on weekdays (¥1,000 more on weekends), with towels and amenities in the room. They can be booked online from a month ahead until 3 p.m. the day before, and using the main baths on top costs extra.
The main baths cost adults ¥1,700 to ¥1,800 on weekdays and ¥2,000 to ¥2,200 on weekends, children ¥1,000. Children under school age aren't admitted to that building. There's no towel rental: a bath towel is ¥550 and a face towel ¥300. Open daily 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and to 9 p.m. on weekends, last entry an hour before, with occasional maintenance closures.
Good to know
- A nap room with hammocks and a tatami lounge for about 40, past the baths.
- Shuttle every ten minutes on weekends, every 15 on weekdays, from Hakone-Yumoto Station.
- No children under school age in the main baths. Families with small children use the private rooms.
Getting there
Above Hakone-Yumoto, three minutes from the station by the operator's free shuttle bus. Parking is free, with 92 spaces.

The only one in Hakone we can show you in writing
Hakone is a resort onsen town, and the rule against tattoos has long been firmest in places like it. Directories list six other properties in the area as tattoo-friendly, and they appear on our Hakone page with an Unverified badge. None of them publishes a policy on its own site, and three trace back to a single competing directory rather than to any operator. Hakone Yuryo is the one place in Hakone where the operator says it in writing. The restriction came off on April 1, 2025, so older guidebooks and forum posts may still say the opposite.

Check in and go to the bath. There's no seal to buy and nothing to mention at the front desk.
