The rule is Hoshino Resorts' group-wide FAQ. It says the group doesn't restrict guests with tattoos, out of respect for other people's cultures, and that any refusal is at the ryokan's discretion rather than by size.

Best for: first-timers who want the shared bath, close to Hakone-Yumoto

Hoshino’s own FAQ puts no tattoo restriction on staying guests. The seal rule it publishes covers baths that non-staying visitors can also use, and this ryokan’s baths are for guests only.

Konohana no Yu, Gotemba

The bathhouse lifted its tattoo rule and says so on its own site, citing more overseas visitors and changing lifestyles. There's no size limit and there are no conditions.

Best for: a day at the Gotemba outlets, with Mount Fuji from the open-air bath and nothing to cover

Run by Odakyu Resorts, the group behind Hakone Yuryo, on its own hot-spring source. It's outside Hakone proper, on the Gotemba side of the mountains, and listed on this site because it's the nearest day trip.

Yamanochaya

No restrictions. The ryokan answers the question directly in its own FAQ: tattooed guests may use the large bath. There are four communal baths, three open-air and one indoor, plus a paid private bath in the valley.

Best for: a valley ryokan at Tonosawa that says yes in writing, for guests who can manage stairs

One of the few places in Hakone that addresses tattoos on its own site rather than leaving it to directories. The private bath in the valley is paid, 45 minutes a turn, taken first come on the day of arrival, eight groups a day, 3 p.m. to midnight.

Gora Hanaougi

No restrictions. The ryokan answers the question in its own FAQ: tattooed guests may use the large bath, with no seal and no size named. Every room also has its own open-air bath.

Best for: anyone who wants a yes in writing for the shared bath and a private bath anyway

Communal baths run 3 p.m. to midnight and 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Because every room has its own open-air bath, the shared bath is a choice here rather than the only option.

The rule is in the ryokan’s own FAQ. The private open-air bath, free to guests for 40 minutes, is another way around it.

The FAQ doesn't say how small is small enough for the tape. A room with its own bath avoids the question.

Best for: day visitors with a smaller tattoo, and families who want a private cottage bath

Operated by Nihon House Hotel & Resort, which uses identical wording at Hotel Shikinoyakata Hakone Ashinoko, so this is a group policy rather than one hotel's decision.

Best for: adults who want a lake-view bath and a hot-spring tub in the room as a fallback

The hotel calls this a trial, so it's a policy that could be withdrawn rather than a settled one. Same wording and same date as Hotel Morinokaze Hakone Sengokuhara. Both are run by Nihon House Hotel & Resort. Merged in September 2026 with a duplicate entry of the same property, whose earlier record described the policy as a cover-seal trial since July 1, 2024.

Laforet Hakone Gora Yunosumika

Best for: a small tattoo that two standard seals hide, or dog owners who want an Ayakan room with its own bath

Communal onsen baths with an open-air section, on men's and women's sides. The 8 cm × 10 cm (3.1 × 3.9 in) figure is the size of one seal and the hotel allows two, so read it as two separate coverable areas rather than a single 8 cm × 20 cm (3.1 × 7.9 in) strip. Merged in September 2026 with a duplicate entry of the same property. A third-party site described private bath rooms here; the hotel's own bath page describes communal baths only, so that is unverified and not the basis for this listing.

The refusal is on the hotel's hot spring page and its day-use page. The Asian Twin's open-air bath is heated water, not the spring, so pick another room type.

Larger and more affordable than most on this list: a mid-range option.

Hotel Indigo Hakone Gora (by IHG)

The hotel's own pitch is that every room's bath is filled from the Miyagino spring. The shared Thermal Spring is taken in a swimsuit, and no tattoo rule for it appears on the hotel's pages.

Best for: guests who'd rather soak in the room than in a communal bath

Don't read that silence as permission for the shared area. One phone call would settle it.

The exclusivity is the operator's own wording. The tattoo-friendly label came from a crowd-sourced directory and has been dropped. Nothing about tattoos appears on the property's site.
