Does Makoto no Hinoki-yu allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

A single cypress tub of source-fed Yuki water, rented an hour at a time, rebuilt from local timber after the town’s open-air bath had stood empty for nineteen years.

You bathe alone, so no tattoo rule applies. The whole facility is one open-air cypress tub rented by the hour: you pick up a key, walk three minutes from the reception center and lock the gate behind you. Nobody else is in the water with you and the operator publishes no tattoo restriction.

Visit Hiroshima Tourist Pass One, two or three days on every Hiroshima streetcar line, the ferry to Miyajima and the main city buses. The streetcar is how you reach most of the hotels on this page from the station. Sold on Klook.

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Best for: A cypress tub of source-fed water with the door locked and up to six people

4,000 yen for a 60-minute slot, up to six bathers, six slots a day at 09:00, 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00 and 16:30, with the last one bookable a month ahead. Pay and collect the key at the Hiroshima City Yuki Exchange Experience Center next to Yuki Lodge, one minute by car or three on foot. Bring towels; only the biodegradable soap provided may be used, to protect the river. Online booking takes cards only, same-day booking by phone only, and the tub needs about two hours to fill. Run by the NPO Yuki tourism association, which rebuilt the bath after nineteen years using cypress cut in Yuki-cho.
