Hitoyoshi Onsen Shirasagiso
人吉温泉しらさぎ荘
Does Hitoyoshi Onsen Shirasagiso allow tattoos? In a private bath
Shirasagiso has five rooms on a pond fed by a famous spring, and its two detached ones, Aoi and Wabisuke, keep a tub of the inn's slippery bicarbonate water that you can use at any hour.
Shirasagiso publishes no tattoo rule. The two detached rooms, Aoi and Wabisuke, have their own indoor spring bath usable at any hour, and the main building keeps two family baths, Manryo and Senryo, that guests use by arrangement with the staff, so there is a bath to yourself without the shared Shirasagi-no-yu.
The bath
The inn's water is a sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring, weakly alkaline at pH 7.51, flowing straight through the tubs. It feels slippery and soft, small bubbles settle on the skin, and the inn says you come out smooth, which is why it calls the water a beauty bath and a bath for fertility. The large bath, Shirasagi-no-yu, is on the first floor of the main building, one indoor tub each for men and women with no open-air bath and no sauna, open 6 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 10:30 p.m. The building's door locks at 10:30 p.m. Day visitors may use the large bath noon to 9 p.m. for ¥800 (adults), ¥400 (schoolchildren) and ¥300 (from age three), with a towel for ¥300 and an 11-visit pass for ¥6,000.
Two family baths in the main building, Manryo and Senryo, are private rooms with a stone-walled tub and a wooden spout, on the same hours as the large bath; guests are shown in by the staff rather than booking a slot, and the inn names them as the bath for the three upstairs rooms. Day visitors can sometimes book a family bath ahead by asking the inn.
The two detached rooms, Aoi and Wabisuke, each have their own indoor spring bath, open to the room's guests for the whole stay, with a sliding door onto the garden. They are the only baths here with no closing time.
The hotel
Shirasagiso opened in 1912 and sits on about 2,000 tsubo (a unit of about 3.3 square meters) of grounds around a pond fed by a spring the inn counts among Kumamoto's best waters, with buildings scattered through the garden. The 2020 flood put 4.5 meters of water through it; the present inn is the rebuild. Five rooms take about 20 guests: the detached Aoi (62.79 square meters) and Wabisuke (60.52), and three upstairs rooms in the main building, Yamaboshi, Hototogisu and Mukuge, which share the family baths. Check-in 4 p.m., check-out 10 a.m. All rooms are non-smoking; the inn holds an accessibility certification and lends shower chairs.
Good to know
- The family baths are by staff guidance, not a sign-up sheet; ask when you check in.
- The doors lock at 10:30 p.m., and the main-building baths close with them.
- Bring a towel for day use, or buy one for ¥300 at the second-floor desk.
- GPS gets the route wrong: the inn says follow Route 219 straight through the Yasaka Shrine crossing and watch for its signs.
Getting there
From Kumamoto Sakuramachi bus terminal take the Sanko highway bus down the Kyushu Expressway to Hitoyoshi, about 1 hour 50 minutes by the city's count. The inn gives about 7 minutes by car from JR Hitoyoshi Station and about 10 minutes from the Hitoyoshi interchange; it publishes no bus stop and no walking time. From Kagoshima Airport the Tsubame Airport Liner shuttle runs about 1 hour to the Hitoyoshi Onsen inns, with the drop-off set when you book. Free parking for 15 cars.
