Does Ooedo Onsen Monogatari Wanwan Resort Yataya Shotoen allow tattoos? Yes, covered

Cover seal required

Tattoos are allowed in the large bath only if the hotel’s paid cover-up seal hides them completely. The inn takes only guests traveling with a dog, and some rooms have an open-air bath you can share with your dog.

The rule is on the inn’s own hot spring page, part of the Ooedo Onsen Monogatari group.

The bath

Each side of the large bath has an indoor bath with windows on Lake Shibayama and a small open-air bath; the men’s looks across the lake toward Mount Hakusan. The water is a salty spring that keeps you warm, with water added, heated and filtered. Hours are 3 p.m. to midnight and 2 a.m. to 10 a.m., except during cleaning. Dogs can’t come into the large bath. Children 7 or older, or taller than 120 cm (3 ft 11 in), use the bath for their own gender.

Some rooms have their own open-air bath, and the inn sells them as a bath you can take with your dog.

The hotel

The inn opened in 1896 and now takes only guests with dogs. Every room looks over Lake Shibayama, with tatami floors and airweave mattresses for dogs, and there’s a sukiya-style detached room in the garden. Dinner is kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal), your dog can eat with you, and dog meals can be ordered. Check-in is 3 p.m., checkout 11 a.m. Parking is free, about 30 cars.

Getting there

Katayamazu Onsen bus stop · Taxi or CANBUS Sea Route
4 minutes on foot.

From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kaga-Onsen, about 2 hours 40 minutes. Some trains run straight through; if yours ends at Kanazawa, change there to the Tsurugi. From Kaga-Onsen Station, take a short taxi. The CANBUS Sea Route covers the same leg but runs only every hour or two. The inn doesn’t run a shuttle from the station.

What happens when you arrive

Ask at the front desk for the hotel’s paid cover-up seal and cover the tattoo completely before you use the large bath. If your room has an open-air bath, you can use that instead.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the information notice on the inn’s hot spring page); open-air rooms from the Katayamazu tourism association’s page
