Refused at the large baths unless the tattoo is completely hidden under the hotel’s own cover seal, which it sells. The notice is on the bath page and under the day-use prices, so it applies to a walk-in as well as a guest. No size limit is given.

Baths 15:00–24:00 and 05:00–10:00. Both open-air baths have a hot tub and a cooler one. The garden foot bath closes from 1 December to 31 March. The hotel describes a 4,000-tsubo lawn garden. Day bathing is sold. Seal price not published.

The hotel’s own seal is the only way into the large baths with a tattoo: it must be the paid seal the hotel specifies, and it must cover the tattoo completely. The wording is on the bath page and the day-use page. A tattoo too big for the seal is refused.

Baths 15:00–24:00 and 02:00–10:00. Utase-yu falls and a sauna. Lounges by the lobby and after the bath serve alcohol and soft drinks, with a manga corner. A foot bath faces the courtyard. The association page describes herbal open-air baths and an activity program (cycling, cruising, craft workshops). Seal price not published.

No tattoo rule is published on the hotel’s bath page or its FAQ. The rooms on the eighth floor, the top, have an open-air bath of their own facing the Hakusan range, and one of those is the way to bathe without the question.

Best for: A top-floor open-air tub facing the Hakusan range across the lake

Top-floor open-air rooms: a Japanese room (10 mats plus veranda and balcony) from 31,000 yen and a Japanese-Western suite with twin beds and a shower booth from 32,000 yen, per room for two with two meals. The page does not say whether the room bath is hot spring water. Large bath Tamayura-no-yu, 15 m of window on the lake, open 15:00–25:00 and 05:00–10:00, with a new sauna. APA’s city hotels have published tattoo rules elsewhere; this property’s pages have none.

Kanoya Kourakuen

No tattoo rule is published. There are two private baths, Oshidori and Nagomi, rented at the front desk for 45 minutes, and a room type with a half-open-air bath on free-flowing source water. The private baths cannot be booked ahead: you ask at the desk which one is free.

Best for: A walk-in private bath on the town’s biggest source, no booking needed

Private baths: Oshidori 2,200 yen and Nagomi 3,300 yen for 45 minutes, tax included. No advance reservation; day visitors can rent them too. 48 Japanese rooms, all facing the lake; a room type with a free-flowing half-open-air bath looks over Lake Shibayama. The inn says its source water is barely diluted or reheated and is drinkable; the large bath tubs are filtered.

Tokigasane

No tattoo rule is published. Two room types have an open-air bath of 100 percent Katayamazu hot spring water looking over the lake, a Japanese-Western room and a traditional Japanese room, and those are the rooms to book.

Best for: An open-air hot spring tub with Lake Shibayama in front of it

Room types with a source open-air bath: a Japanese-Western room (entry, 12-mat room and two bedrooms) and a traditional Japanese room. Large bath 15:00–25:00 and 05:00–10:00. Private stone-sauna room Hoshi no Fune, 500 yen per use for guests. No regular closing day. The same company ran Kaga Kanko Hotel, which it closed in 2020 while keeping Tokigasane open.
