Does Hoshino Resorts KAI Kinugawa allow tattoos? Yes!

Nothing to cover

Nothing to cover. Hoshino Resorts doesn't restrict guests with tattoos, but reserves the right to refuse the bath if it would make other guests uncomfortable.

The rule is Hoshino Resorts' group-wide FAQ. It says the group doesn't restrict guests with tattoos, out of respect for other people's cultures, and that any refusal is at the ryokan's discretion rather than by size.

The bath

Kinugawa Onsen was found in the Edo period, the ryokan says, and at first only monks and daimyo (feudal lords) on pilgrimage to Nikko were allowed to bathe in it. The water is a simple spring, which the ryokan describes as gentle enough for a long soak without wearing you out. The indoor bath is walled in large sheets of glass, so the seasons on the Kinugawa show from the tub, including cherry blossoms in spring. Outside it is a stone open-air bath.

The rest area after the bath is furnished with cushions and fans in Kurobane indigo dye, with a local drink and ice pops set out. From January 12 to March 31, 2027, it adds free strawberries and a strawberry drink. The large baths are open 2:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Some rooms have their own open-air bath on a terrace of Oya stone that looks into the forest, including a room for guests traveling with a dog. Massage by licensed therapists runs 7 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (last booking 11:30 p.m.) for guests 16 and over.

The hotel

Forty-eight rooms for one to three guests, built around a courtyard on a rise above the river, and furnished with Tochigi crafts: Mashiko pottery, Kurobane indigo and Oya stone. Dinner is a kaiseki course served on Mashiko ware, in semi-private booths or at a counter facing the courtyard, at 5:30 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. The signature dish is a hot pot of eel and duck. A Mashiko ware specialist gives a free talk every evening, and after dark the courtyard is lit with pottery shards.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the group's own FAQ; the property publishes no separate rule)

The operator’s own wording. Show it if anyone asks.

Best for: couples arriving on the direct train who want a Hoshino Resorts ryokan in the valley

The same FAQ sets a different rule for baths that non-staying guests can also use. There, a tattoo must be coverable by eight seals of 8 cm × 10 cm (3.1 × 3.9 in). This property's baths are for guests of the ryokan, so the unrestricted half is the half that applies.
