Tattoo friendly onsen in Kinugawa Onsen

Kinugawa is a gorge of big resort hotels, and big hotels put their rules in writing. Hoshino Resorts’ KAI Kinugawa asks a tattooed guest to cover nothing. The three Ooedo Onsen Monogatari houses, Kinugawa Kanko Hotel, Kinugawa Gyoen and TAOYA Kawaji, admit a tattoo that two of their paid seals hide; Asaya takes one small tattoo under a seal, and Kinugawa Onsen Hotel one that a seal covers. Everyone else answers with a bath you do not share: Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel and Hotel Sunshine sell rooms with an open-air tub, and Yume no Toki rents five private baths by the slot.

Hoshino Resorts KAI Kinugawa

星野リゾート 界 鬼怒川

The rule is Hoshino Resorts' group-wide FAQ. It says the group doesn't restrict guests with tattoos, out of respect for other people's cultures, and that any refusal is at the ryokan's discretion rather than by size.

Best for: couples arriving on the direct train who want a Hoshino Resorts ryokan in the valley

The same FAQ sets a different rule for baths that non-staying guests can also use. There, a tattoo must be coverable by eight seals of 8 cm × 10 cm (3.1 × 3.9 in). This property's baths are for guests of the ryokan, so the unrestricted half is the half that applies.

The rule is in the hotel's own FAQ. It asks tattooed guests to use a private bath or the bath in their room, and makes the exception for a one-point tattoo a seal hides.

Tattoos are allowed in the large baths only if the hotel’s own paid cover seals hide them completely, and the group’s bath rules cap that at two seals. Anything bigger means the private baths: Kinu-no-yu with a half-open-air tub, or Nikko-no-yu with its own bedrock sauna room, 90 minutes for 4,400 yen, booked at the front desk on the day.

Group bath terms (ooedoonsen.jp/terms/?section=onsen) refuse tattoos 「※当館指定のシール2枚で完全に覆うことができる場合を除く」. Seals are sold by the hotel; the page gives no size or price. Two large baths, Keicho-no-yu and Kirifuri-no-yu, swap between men and women, eight tubs between them; 15:00 to 24:00 and 05:00 to 10:00. The hotel’s FAQ takes the question and answers it sideways: a guest with a tattoo is asked to be considerate of other bathers, and the hotel recommends its private baths. Read that as a private listing. Five private open-air baths are the way in: each is fed straight from the source, each has a tatami rest room, and a 50-minute slot costs 3,000 yen before tax (4,000 yen for Ryugu). Common questions

Kinugawa Onsen questions

Can I use a shared bath in Kinugawa Onsen with a tattoo?

At KAI Kinugawa, with nothing to cover, under Hoshino Resorts’ group rule. Five hotels take a covered tattoo: the Ooedo Onsen Monogatari houses sell their own seals and allow two at most, Asaya admits one small tattoo under a seal, and Kinugawa Onsen Hotel admits a tattoo a seal hides. No other hotel in the gorge publishes an open rule.

Which Kinugawa hotels have a bath of my own?

Nineteen listings here. Kinugawa Kanaya Hotel, Hotel Sunshine, Mikazuki and Nanaeyae sell rooms with an open-air tub. Yume no Toki rents five private baths by the slot, Kinugawa Plaza Hotel has its Hoozukitei private baths, Kinugawa Park Hotels rents one for 50 minutes, Hana no Yado Matsuya for 45 and Shirakawa Yunokura two for 50; Oyado Ichifuji lets you take its bath hall alone when it is empty.

Do the hotels that take a seal sell the seals?

The Ooedo Onsen Monogatari hotels sell their own and publish no size; two is the limit. Asaya sells them in its sixth-floor shop. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel publishes no size and does not say whether it sells them, so bring your own.

How do I get to Kinugawa Onsen from Tokyo?

The Tobu limited express from Asakusa, the Kinu or the Revaty Kinugawa, reaches Kinugawa-Onsen Station in about 2 hours 5 minutes with no change and Kinugawa-Koen a few minutes later. JR’s Spacia Kinugawa runs through from Shinjuku. Kawaji-Yumoto, for TAOYA Kawaji, is twenty minutes further on the Yagan railway.
