Does Fujiya allow tattoos? In a private bath

Fujiya’s spring carries iron and acid, and the inn says the color shifts with the weather, milky one day and rust brown the next, in the same two rock baths you can lock behind you.

Two family baths, both rock-lined and sized for two adults, and the inn tells guests to use them at any hour they please during their stay. Nothing to book, nothing to pay, nothing to declare. The men’s and women’s baths are shared and the inn publishes no tattoo rule for them.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. An acidic iron-bearing spring at 53°C, diluted a little for temperature, which the inn says turns white or brown depending on the weather and the water. Sen-no-yu is the men’s bath in cypress; Chihiro-no-yu, the women’s, has a semi-open-air section, a lying-down bath and a mist sauna.
