Kofukan opened in 1922, eleven years after Myoko Onsen itself, and its private bath is the old Otome-no-yu, named in 1954 by the painter Kosugi Hoan and rebuilt with a window on the mountains.

Kofukan publishes no tattoo rule for its shared baths. It does rent a private bath, KAI, for 2,200 yen per 50 minutes, booked by the hour from 07:00 to 23:00, and it takes same-day requests. Day visitors can rent it too, on top of the 800-yen bathing fee.

Where it is

Everything here is reached from Tokyo. Karuizawa is an hour on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Echigo-Yuzawa 79 minutes on the Joetsu Shinkansen, both with no change. Kawaguchiko is the Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku, about two hours, and Isawa the Kaiji, an hour and forty. JR East Pass Covers the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nagano. The Shinano Railway on to Myoko-Kogen is a separate company and is paid separately. Sold on Klook.

Best for: A cheap night near Myoko-Kogen STN with an hour in a private bath

Private bath KAI: 2,200 yen for 50 minutes; staying guests book on the hour 07:00–23:00, same day accepted; lunch day-trippers 11:00–15:00. A plan with one 50-minute private bath included starts at 14,300 yen. The water is a weak alkaline simple spring from Minami-Jigokudani, free-flowing, heated in winter. The shared baths (Yamazato-no-yu, Ka-no-yu, Kaze-no-yu) each have an open-air bath. The inn says the owner has worked in hotels abroad and the okami speaks English. Some rooms have a bath and toilet (1,650 yen extra); others share.
