Does Nasu Onsen Shinshun no Kago Hewitt Resort allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Shinshun no Kago is a new resort in the Nasu woods with a half-open-air tub of cloudy sulfur water in every room, and a private sauna in some.

Shinshun no Kago publishes no tattoo rule. Every room has its own half-open-air bath of source-flowing sulfur water, so there is nothing to share.

The bath

The water is a simple sulfur spring, cloudy white, which the resort runs through its tubs straight from the source. It lists muscle pain, neuralgia and recovery from fatigue as what the water is for, and adds ¥150 a person in bathing tax at checkout. Its hot spring page recalls that Nasu's springs were found about 1,390 years ago and were visited by Minamoto no Yoritomo and the poet Basho.

The shared bath is on the first floor, one hall for men and one for women, open 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. (last entry 9 a.m.) and 2 p.m. to midnight (last entry 11 p.m.). A rest space with a soft-drink vending machine is on the second floor.

The reason to come is the room. Every one of the 20 rooms has its own half-open-air bath of the same source-flowing sulfur water, so a tattooed guest never has to enter the shared hall. The tub sits in a glass-walled bay off the room, open to the forest through a balcony rail, with a wooden spout box feeding it and a washbasin counter beside it. The suites and the larger twins add a private sauna: the Shinshun-no-Kago Suite (72 m², four guests), the Oruri Suite (82 m², six), the Kamoshika Family Suite (82 m², four), the Premium Twin (54 m²) and the 70 m² Deluxe Twin all have one. The 51 m² Deluxe Twin and the three Superior Twins (36 to 40 m², one with a balcony) have the bath without the sauna.

The hotel

A 20-room resort opened under the Hewitt Resort name in 2024, in the woods off the Nasu Kaido at about 700 m, and listed in the Michelin Guide hotel selection for 2026, its second year running. Check-in is 2 p.m. (as late as midnight), checkout 11 a.m., and the whole building is non-smoking. Dinner is a Japanese-based modern course of Nasu and seasonal produce, served in private dining rooms on the first floor from 5:30 p.m. (last seating 8:30), with a Japanese breakfast tray from 7 a.m.; there is no room service or in-room dining.
