Tattoo friendly onsen in Nasu Onsen

Nasu is a highland resort on the slopes of the Nasu volcanoes in Tochigi, where the imperial family has kept a villa since 1926. Its oldest bath, Shika-no-yu, is said to date from the year 630.

Nasu’s hotels answer the tattoo question more often than most towns’ inns do. RISONARE Nasu, under Hoshino Resorts’ rule, asks a guest to cover nothing in its guests-only hot spring. Hotel Laforet Nasu admits a tattoo under two seals of 8 by 10 centimeters, and FOURTREAT plus under two of 10 by 15 sold at the desk. The rest of the mountain sells a bath you do not share: Nasu Bettei Kai, Hoshi no Akari and Shiki no Yakata give every room a tub, Wellness no Mori unlocks four free private baths, and Matsukawaya rents its stone baths by the hour.

Hoshino Resorts’ group FAQ says the group doesn’t restrict guests with tattoos, though staff may turn someone away from the baths if they judge other guests would be frightened. The same FAQ asks for cover seals only at baths that non-staying guests share, and this resort’s hot spring is for staying guests only.

Hotel Mori no Kaze and Hotel Shiki no Yakata wrote a trial seal rule in 2024 that their pages no longer show, so only Shiki no Yakata is listed, for its room tubs. Shika-no-yu, the bathhouse the village grew up around, publishes no rule either way. Rosewood Garden & Villa says its indoor tubs are heated well water; the open-air ones are the spring.

Common questions

Nasu Onsen questions

Can I use a shared bath in Nasu Onsen with a tattoo?

At RISONARE Nasu, with nothing to cover, under Hoshino Resorts’ group rule for guests-only baths. Two hotels take a covered tattoo: Hotel Laforet Nasu under two seals of 8 by 10 centimeters, and FOURTREAT plus NASUKOGEN under two of 10 by 15, sold at its desk.

Which Nasu inns give me a bath of my own?

Seventeen listings. Nasu Bettei Kai, Hoshi no Akari, Shiki no Yakata and Rosewood Garden & Villa put a tub in every room. Wellness no Mori Nasu has four free private baths, locked from inside. Sanraku, Sansuikaku, Jizaiso and the highland hotels sell rooms with an open-air bath. Matsukawaya, a day-use bath, rents two stone private baths by the hour.

Can I bathe at Shika-no-yu with a tattoo?

Shika-no-yu’s own site, FAQ and price page say nothing about tattoos either way, and this guide does not list on silence. Until the bathhouse answers, treat it as unknown. Matsukawaya, a few minutes up the lane, rents private baths by the hour.

How do I get to Nasu Onsen from Tokyo?

The Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Nasushiobara, 68 minutes on the Yamabiko, then the Kanto Jidosha bus from the station’s west exit up the Nasu Kaido to Nasu Yumoto Onsen, 52 minutes. About 2 hours 20 minutes door to door, and most of the highland hotels are at stops on the way up.
