Takayama Green Hotel
高山グリーンホテル
Does Takayama Green Hotel allow tattoos? Yes, covered
Takayama Green Hotel pipes its own Tenryo-no-yu spring, pH 8.1, into two bath halls, one with a cypress tub and a rock pool set in a Japanese garden, and its FAQ lets tattooed bathers in when a cover seal hides the tattoo completely.
Tattoos are refused in the large baths unless a cover seal hides them completely; with everything covered, you may bathe. The hotel asks guests to bring their own seals and names no size limit. It has no private or family bath, and the open-air tubs in its main-wing rooms are not spring water.

The bath
The hotel's source is called Tenryo-no-yu, a sodium chloride and hydrogen carbonate spring that comes up at 32.5 degrees Celsius. The hotel heats it, circulates it through filters, and calls it a beauty bath because of its pH of 8.1. It lists the water for nerve, muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, poor circulation and fatigue.
There are two bath halls. Honjin Daiyokuden, on the first floor of the Tenryokaku wing, has a large indoor bath behind a wall of glass that faces the Japanese garden. Outside are two open-air baths: a cypress tub that turns into a jacuzzi at the press of a button, and a rock pool that is lit at night. A dry sauna runs from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.; there is no cold plunge, only a large rain shower. Tenryo-no-yu Fuga, in the basement of the main wing, has an indoor bath and an open-air bath with high-concentration carbonated water.
Staying guests bathe from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. and from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. Day visitors buy a ticket from the machine in the lobby and hand it in at the bath desk. The five main-wing room types with an open-air tub, from the Royal Suites to the Standard rooms, are filled with ordinary heated water.
The hotel
The hotel belongs to the Keio group and has 238 rooms in three wings: Orinkaku, with 101 non-smoking rooms in seven types, Tenryokaku, furnished with Hida woodwork, and the main wing. Four restaurants serve Japanese, Chinese, buffet and teppan-yaki meals, and a lounge looks onto the garden. The Hida Bussankan souvenir hall on the grounds stocks more than 7,000 items and runs craft workshops. A fitness room is free for staying guests from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parking holds 250 cars.

Best for: covering a small tattoo and using a garden rock bath a short walk from the station, as a day visitor or a staying guest
Bring cover seals; the hotel does not hand them out. Day-use bathing costs ¥1,500 for adults, ¥750 for elementary school children and ¥300 for ages 3 to 5, face towel included, with a bath towel sold for ¥500. Day hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (last entry 1 p.m.) and 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. (last entry 9 p.m.). Midday visitors from Monday to Thursday use the basement bath Tenryo-no-yu Fuga; midday visitors from Friday to Sunday and all evening visitors use Honjin Daiyokuden. Five main-wing room types have an open-air tub, and the hotel says room baths are not hot spring water. Children in diapers may not bathe.
