Does Garden Spa Tokachigawa Onsen allow tattoos? Yes, covered
Called directly in September 2026: covered tattoos are allowed, but the covering depends on size and place. A small tattoo can be covered with a seal, brought by the guest. A larger one needs a rash guard on the upper body — bring your own or rent one on site for 220 yen in M or L. Anything on the legs needs a seal regardless of size.
The bath
Everyone here bathes in a swimsuit or the house’s yuamigi gown, and the cover system runs on top of that base layer rather than needing bare skin covered from scratch. A tattoo small enough for the property (confirmed by phone, September 2026) is covered with a seal, brought by the guest. Past that, on the torso or arms, the property asks for a rash guard instead of a seal, and only above the waist — anything on the legs still needs a seal regardless of size. A rash guard can be brought from home or rented on site for 220 yen, in M and L sizes.
A rash guard is a lightweight, quick-dry athletic shirt, originally made for surfers, now common as swimwear cover in Japan. It looks like a snug long-sleeve T-shirt and fully covers the torso and arms.

Two real examples, if you want to see what to buy or pack: a men’s long-sleeve rash guard hoodie and a women’s long-sleeve rash guard with thumb holes.
