This is the inn nearest the Toyako spring head, which is why the water changes color and character from one day to the next, and its operator is the only one on the lake that sells a cover seal over the counter.

Allowed in the shared baths if the tattoo fits under two cover seals. Relo Hotels & Resorts, which operates this inn, sets the rule for its whole group and sells the seals at the front desk at 250 yen each, 10 by 15 cm. The rule covers the sauna and the open-air bath as well as the indoor tubs, and the group states that anyone who declines to use a seal may be refused. Two seals is 300 cm² of coverage, so this works for a forearm piece and not for a sleeve.

Where it is

Sapporo to Noboribetsu Onsen is about 1 h 45: the Suzuran, JR’s limited express (a faster train with fewer stops and a fee on top of the fare), then a Donan bus of 21 minutes up to the onsen terminal. Toyako Onsen is the Hokuto, the limited express to Hakodate, as far as Toya, then a Donan bus of 24 minutes around the lake, about 2 h 20 in all. Niseko is about 3 h 25 by way of Otaru and Kutchan, or a direct highway coach for less money. Best for: A forearm or shoulder piece that two 10 by 15 cm seals will cover, in a shared open-air bath

Buy the seals at the front desk, 250 yen each, and the inn does not stock a larger size. Two bath houses, Toshin-no-yu and Shimizu-no-yu, each with an open-air bath, open 6:00–9:00 and 15:00–24:00; a sauna was added in November 2023. No reservable private bath. Day-use bathing is 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for ages 3 to 12, towels included, at a flat rate on weekdays and weekends alike, and the inn warns it can suspend or move those hours without notice. The same operator publishes a separate page allowing a bath garment for surgical scars.
