Ryotei Hanzuiryo
旅亭 半水盧
Does Ryotei Hanzuiryo allow tattoos? In a private bath
Hanzuiryo is fourteen detached houses on five thousand tsubo (a unit of about 3.3 square meters) of garden. Twelve have a cypress tub of heated water, and the two special rooms add an open-air bath and a sauna of their own.
Hanzuiryo publishes no tattoo rule. Its two special rooms, Tsubakien and Juen, have an open-air bath and a sauna of their own, and the operator company names a private bath, Nishi-no-yu, beside the main bathhouse without publishing its fee or hours. The cypress tub in each of the other twelve houses is heated water, not the spring, by the inn’s own rooms page.
The bath
Hanzuiryo’s bathhouse is Higashi-no-yu, the east bath: an indoor bath under a timber ceiling, a rock open-air bath outside its glass wall, a sauna and a cold bath, open 15:00 to 24:00 and 5:00 to 11:00. The inn stands inside the Unzen-Amakusa National Park and describes Unzen as a spring opened some 1,300 years ago, good for the skin and for aches; it does not publish the spring type. The operator company also names a private bath, Nishi-no-yu, beside it, with no fee, minutes or booking terms published, so ask when you reserve.
The rooms carry their own tubs, with a distinction that matters here. The two special rooms, Tsubakien and Juen, single-story houses of 300 square meters limited to two parties a night, each have an open-air bath and a sauna; the inn does not say whether that bath is spring water. The twelve houses in the six two-story sukiya buildings each have a cypress indoor bath that the rooms page marks as heated water, not the spring. A tattooed guest who wants the spring itself has Nishi-no-yu to ask about, or one of the two special rooms.
The hotel
A garden inn opened in 1992 on 5,000 tsubo, about 16,500 square meters, of wooded ground, with fourteen detached rooms in the sukiya style and no shared corridors between them. Onko Chishin, which runs a small group of luxury inns, took over on April 1, 2024, keeping the kitchen's line of three head chefs. Dinner is formal kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) on a monthly menu of Nagasaki and Kyushu produce, served with chosen tableware; the inn says the food held a Michelin star in 2019 and the house a Michelin Key in 2024 and 2025. There is a library, a shop and a gazebo in the garden.

Best for: a splurge on a detached garden house, with one of the two special rooms if you want an open-air bath of your own
14 rooms, all detached: two single-story special rooms of 300 square meters with an open-air bath, sauna, home bar and tea room, and twelve rooms in six two-story sukiya buildings of about 250 square meters whose cypress bath the rooms page marks as heated water. The hot spring page names one bathhouse, Higashi-no-yu, with an indoor bath, a rock open-air bath, a sauna and a cold bath, open 15:00 to 24:00 and 5:00 to 11:00. The inn does not say whether the special rooms’ open-air baths hold spring water. Run by Onko Chishin since April 1, 2024. Opened 1992.
