Does Hoshino Resorts Kai Unzen allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Kai Unzen sells rooms with an open-air tub of the Jigoku's milky acid spring and a lounge chair to dry off in, so the hotel's bathhouse, with its stained-glass indoor bath, can be skipped altogether.

Kai Unzen's own pages say nothing about tattoos. The group FAQ that its site links to says Hoshino Resorts does not restrict guests with tattoos, but may refuse the hot spring and large bath if it judges that other guests would be frightened. The sure answer here is a room with its own open-air bath, which the hotel sells and the booking page lists.

The bath

The water comes straight from the Unzen Jigoku across the road: an acid spring bearing iron, cloudy in a way the hotel calls particular to Unzen, free-flowing with water added to cool it. The hotel lists iron-deficiency anemia, menstrual and menopausal complaints and a sterilizing effect. The large bath is in a separate bathhouse, the yugoya, and the walk to it passes through the steam and fumes of the Jigoku. Inside, the indoor bath is set with stained glass in the mixed Japanese, Chinese and Dutch style the hotel calls wakaran, and at sunrise the colors fall across the water; the open-air bath sits on the same ground as the Jigoku with its steam in view. A lounge serves Nagasaki drinks after the bath. The hotel's staff also lead a short walk to the vents that feed the baths. Hours are not published.

The rooms with their own open-air bath are the reason to list the place. The hotel describes a wide open-air tub paired with a cooling-down space to rest in after the soak, so the whole stay can be spent bathing in the room. Its photo shows a long tub of the milky spring on a terrace, steam rising, with two blue lounge chairs and a stained-glass screen inside the glass door. The count of such rooms is not published; the booking page lists two types.

The hotel

Kai Unzen is Hoshino Resorts' hot-spring inn at Unzen, 51 rooms for one to four guests, all in the regional style the brand calls wakaran, a mix of Japanese, Chinese and Dutch motifs from Nagasaki's trading past. Dinner is a kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) built around a shabu-shabu in flying-fish broth, at 5:30 or 7:30 p.m.; breakfast is a Shimabara guzoni rice-cake soup, 7:30 to 9 a.m., with a Western option. Two rooms take dogs up to 20 kg. Four EV chargers run around the clock, and the hotel advises winter tires or chains in the cold months.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the hot spring page sells rooms with their own open-air bath; the quote is the Hoshino Resorts group FAQ linked from the hotel's site, not a Kai Unzen page, and it reserves a refusal)

Best for: someone who wants the Hoshino treatment at Unzen and a terrace tub of the milky spring to themselves

Rooms with their own open-air bath and a cooling-down space; the hotel does not publish how many. Trip.com lists two such types, RA2 (42 square meters, king bed, floors 5 and 6) and RA3 (75 square meters, three beds). The group FAQ adds that facilities also used by non-guests admit tattoos only if eight cover seals of 8 cm × 10 cm (3.1 × 3.9 in) can hide them; Kai Unzen’s own pages carry no such rule. Spring: acid, iron-bearing simple spring from the Unzen Jigoku, free-flowing with water added. Large bath in a separate bathhouse with a stained-glass indoor bath and an open-air bath on the Jigoku. Two pet rooms.
