Does Suzuya Konnichiro allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Two top-floor rooms at Konnichiro, Mai and Miyabi, opened in 2024 with an open-air bath and a sauna on the balcony, a night of bathing with nobody else in the water.

Konnichiro publishes no tattoo rule. Two top-floor rooms, Mai and Miyabi, opened in April 2024 with an open-air bath and a sauna of their own, so a guest in either never shares the water.

The bath

The water is Yamanaka Onsen, which the inn says the monk Gyoki found about 1,300 years ago and Basho ranked among the three great springs of Japan. The inn's figures: a calcium-sodium sulfate spring, alkaline, pH 8.4, 48.2°C at the source, flowing at about 1,475 liters a minute. It is rich in calcium and sodium and carries carbonate, so it warms you fast. The inn says the tinted water flatters the color of your skin, and lists neuralgia, stiff joints, poor circulation and recovery after illness among its uses. The shared baths are two owan-buro, bowl baths 3.6 meters across modeled on the lacquer bowls Yamanaka is known for: Akayu, the red bowl, and Kuroyu, the black. The sides swap by time. Men have the red bowl 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. and the black bowl 3 p.m. to midnight; women the reverse. The open-air baths close at 11 p.m. Check the curtain before you go in. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, soap, dryers, combs, cotton swabs and razors are provided.

The private baths are in two rooms. Mai and Miyabi opened in April 2024 on the top floor, each a tatami room and a bedroom joined together. Each has an open-air bath and a sauna of its own on the balcony, with the mountains in front. The inn sells them through its own online plans, and nothing on the site puts a price or a time limit on the balcony bath; it is yours for the stay.

The hotel

A traditional Japanese inn run by Suzuya Konnichiro Inc., with pure Japanese-style rooms facing the mountains and a few newer ones. Besides Mai and Miyabi, six modern Japanese-Western rooms (Wakakusa, Sumire, Kurumi, Tenran, Nadeshiko, Tanpopo) have Simmons semi-double beds, a shower booth, yoga mats and streaming TV. The tatami rooms include a top-floor two-room suite, 12- and 8-mat mountain-side rooms and rooms with low Japanese beds. Dinner is Yamanaka's handed-down local cooking alongside other regional dishes. The lobby is finished in local wood and crafts, with a shop, a Yamanaka lacquerware gallery and a folk-craft gallery.
