Does Yama no Hotel Musouen allow tattoos? In a private bath
Musouen sells itself on scale: the hotel puts its women’s open-air bath at roughly 150 tatami mats and the men’s at about 100, both looking across the basin at Mount Yufu. The three small family baths sit off to the side and take no booking at all.
Three family baths, Koyo-no-yu, Tsugumi-no-yu and Mejiro-no-yu, take no reservation and cost guests nothing. The hotel’s instruction is to check at the entrance whether the bath is occupied and walk in if it is not. The huge open-air baths that made the place famous are shared, and no tattoo rule is published for them.
The bath
Three open-air baths, each with a name and a history attached. Gomuso-no-yu, for men, sits under a thatched roof, with tubs of packed earth and natural stone. Kukai-no-yu, for women, is the biggest, and the hotel says the morning mist rises into it on cold mornings from autumn onward; being single-sex, it has the fuller changing room and shower corner. Kobo-no-yu, also for men, is the oldest here and holds the Kobo stone tied to the spring, which the hotel dates back 600 years. Indoors, Hisen-no-yu and Hina-no-yu are for overnight guests and run 24 hours. The source, Gomuso Onsen, is an alkaline simple spring, mixed to 62.5°C.
Koyo-no-yu is the open-air family bath and Tsugumi-no-yu and Mejiro-no-yu are the indoor ones; the hotel asks that a turn be kept to about an hour. Day visitors can use them on the ordinary ticket, which is what makes this one unusual: reception 10:00 to 14:00 and bathing until 14:30, 1,000 yen for adults, 700 for children 5 to 12 and nothing under five; on the day one side is cleaned those fall to 700 and 600. Towels are not provided, so bring one or buy it, 1,500 yen for a bath towel and 300 for a face towel. One bath closes each weekday in rotation, family indoor baths Monday, family open-air Tuesday, Kukai-no-yu Wednesday, Kobo-no-yu Thursday, Gomuso-no-yu Friday.
The hotel
Three buildings on a stone-paved slope, and the room decides what bath you get. In the newer Kobotei, Tsumikusa-no-ma and Shiki-no-ma have a private open-air bath and the hotel says outright that it is hot spring; the other three Kobotei rooms have an indoor tub and it says just as clearly that it is not. Fukuman-no-ma and Ogi-no-ma in the main house have a unit bath, also not the spring. The remaining main-house rooms and the whole Yuyamatei annex have no bath at all.
What is good about it
- Three family baths, free to guests and never booked, you check the door and go in if it is empty.
- The 1,000-yen day ticket covers the family baths, not only the large open-air ones.
- One bath shuts each weekday in turn, so check the rotation before you come for a particular one.
Getting there
Seven minutes by taxi from Yufuin STN, up on the south rim of the basin. Parking is free, about 60 spaces. Inside the grounds are stone-paved slopes and the main building has no elevator, so say beforehand if stairs are a problem.

The hotel publishes no walking time, only 7 minutes by taxi.
