Isen’s cafe brews coffee with onsen water, and its Roten-no-ma rooms put a spring-fed tub on the other side of a single window.

Isen publishes no tattoo rule. Its Roten-no-ma rooms, and one tatami room with a cypress tub, have an open-air bath outside the window running on free-flowing source water all day and night, which settles the question for anyone who books one.

Where it is

Everything here is reached from Tokyo. Karuizawa is an hour on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Echigo-Yuzawa 79 minutes on the Joetsu Shinkansen, both with no change. Kawaguchiko is the Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku, about two hours, and Isawa the Kaiji, an hour and forty.
