Thirteen detached two-story cottages a few minutes south of Beppu Station, every one with an indoor bath and a garden bath of its own and nowhere in the place to bathe together.
All thirteen units are freestanding two-story cottages, and each one has both an indoor bath and a bath in its own garden, with the source poured in undiluted. There is no shared bath to negotiate and no meal service to sit through, since the inn runs room only and expects you to eat in town. Garden baths differ by unit: rock tubs, a full hinoki tub, ceramic bowl tubs and wooden barrels. Ran adds a convection sauna you can pour spring water over, and Chi and To add a low-temperature bedrock bath indoors.

The bath
Every one of the thirteen cottages has an indoor bath and a second bath out in its own garden, both filled straight from the source. The water is a sodium bicarbonate spring at pH 8.2 and it has no smell, which the inn raises for people who keep away from sulfur springs; in the right light it reads faintly blue.
The garden baths are not alike. Some are set in rock, one is cut entirely from hinoki, others are ceramic bowls or wooden barrels, and the gold bowl in Bu is a bowl in the literal sense. Ran adds a convection sauna you can pour spring water over, with a bowl-shaped open-air tub and a chair in the garden for the cooling round. Chi and To each add a low-temperature bedrock bath indoors, and Shin has a stone bed built into its indoor bath. The two special cottages carry the largest baths: an open-air hinoki tub with a stone and hinoki bath and a ceramic sitting bath indoors in one, an open-air rock bath and an all-hinoki indoor bath in the other.
No water here is shared, and no meal is served either. The inn sells the room alone and sends you into town to eat.
The hotel
Thirteen detached two-story cottages of 77 to 124 square meters, a few minutes south of Beppu Station toward Hamawaki. Shinryu and Shinshun, the two special rooms, top 100 square meters and add free drinks, and Shinryu has a tea room of its own. The units have a microwave rather than a kitchen, and the staff will point you at restaurants and delivery. Check-in is 15:00 to 19:00; bathing tax is 250 yen, or 500 above 50,001 yen a head.
What is good about it
- Two baths in every cottage, one indoors and one in the garden, and no two gardens the same.
- Ran has a sauna you pour the spring over, with an open-air bowl tub and a chair outside it.
- Room only, no meals, so the evening is spent in town and brought back.
Getting there
South of JR Beppu STN toward Hamawaki, about ten minutes on foot. The Kyomachi and Fujimi 3-chome bus stops are the closest, and the inn publishes both timetables.
