Does Konohana no Yu, Gotemba allow tattoos? Yes!
A day-use hot spring at Gotemba Premium Outlets, run by the Hakone Yuryo group, with a ten-meter open-air viewing bath facing Mount Fuji, a standing bath built from Fuji’s own boulders, and nineteen private open-air rooms.
No restrictions. The house lifted its tattoo restriction on 1 April 2025, citing more overseas visitors and changing lifestyles, and only guests connected to organized crime are still refused.
The bath
The spring, Gotemba Konohana Onsen, was drilled for this bathhouse: a sodium sulfate, chloride and bicarbonate water, weakly alkaline, containing metasilicic acid. It is circulated and filtered, kept warm by circulation and chlorinated, with water added only in an emergency such as an equipment failure.
The open-air area on each side has two parts. The viewing bath is about ten meters wide and faces Mount Fuji. In front of it, the standing bath is about 130 cm deep, so you can stand in the water and look at the mountain; its rocks are Osawa stones from the Osawa-kuzure landslide on Fuji itself, some weighing two tons. Indoors, behind floor-to-ceiling glass, are a 90 cm deep tub filled with groundwater rather than spring water, a carbonated bath and a seated bath. The sauna runs a staff-fanned aufguss-style löyly four times a day, at 12:30, 15:30, 18:30 and 20:30.
The nineteen private open-air rooms, Kaden, are on the first and third floors; all the third-floor rooms look at Fuji. Tubs are hinoki, pot, cut stone or rock, and an hour costs 5,500 to 8,000 yen, including towels and entry to the main baths. Admission is 1,800 yen on weekdays and 2,200 at weekends, children 950 and 1,150, with a face towel and bath towel included and 400 yen off before 13:00. Children under three cannot use the main baths.
What is good about it
- Stand in the water and look at Fuji: the standing bath is about 130 cm deep.
- Get in before 13:00 and the main-bath admission is 400 yen less.
- Third-floor private rooms all have a Fuji view from the open-air bath.
Getting there
From JR Gotemba STN take the free shuttle to Gotemba Premium Outlets (about 15 minutes), then the free loop bus to the Hill Side area (about 5 minutes) and the elevator to the Hotel Clad front-desk floor. From Hakone-Yumoto STN, the Hakone Tozan L-line bus reaches the outlets in about 60 minutes.
