Does Hitoyoshi Shinjo no Yado allow tattoos? In a private bath
Shinjo no Yado is five low wooden buildings in a cedar-scented complex outside Hitoyoshi, where every room has a tub of source-flow spring water and two of the wings put it outdoors.
Shinjo no Yado publishes no tattoo rule. There is no shared bath: every room has its own bath of source-flow hot spring water, open-air in two of the wings and indoor in the other three, and the family-bath house next door rents private rooms by the hour.
The bath
The room baths and the family baths next door all run on the Hitoyoshi Shinjo spring, which the operator draws from 1,000 meters down at 53.8°C and uses as it comes, flowing through without recirculation; the page gives 50.9°C at the head. It is a sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring, weakly alkaline, which the operator calls a beauty bath for its cleansing and moisturizing feel and lists for neuralgia, muscle pain, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, cuts and burns.
Every room has its own bath. In the Taiheizan and Ichifusayama wings it is an open-air bath off the room, a rock-edged stone tub against the building with a river-stone wall and the garden beyond; in the Shiragadake, Gongendani and Aoeboshiyama wings it is an indoor bath. The two dog-friendly cottages have spring-fed baths and kitchens. There is no large bath to share, and the room bath is yours from check-in to check-out at no charge.
Guests who want more room can walk to Hitoyoshi Shinjo Onsen on the same grounds, the operator's family-bath house: open 6 to 10 p.m. (doors close at 11), ¥1,000 per room for 60 minutes for up to four people, ¥1,200 on weekends, holidays and peak seasons, plus bathing fees of ¥300 an adult, ¥200 a schoolchild and ¥150 a preschooler. A 30-minute extension is ¥500.
The hotel
Fujita, a local company that began as a butcher's shop in 1966, built the inn inside its Shinjo Culture Forest, a campus of small museums and craft halls, using cedar more than 300 years old and koyamaki (umbrella pine) through the rooms. Rooms are 30 square meters for two with twin beds, three to a building across five single-story wings, plus two cottages that take dogs. Breakfast comes as a bento, in the room or in the dining building; dinner is not described on the site. Check-in 3 to 6 p.m., check-out 10 a.m.
Good to know
- Last check-in is 6 p.m., so time the highway bus and the ride out from the station.
- Two wings have the bath outdoors: ask for Taiheizan or Ichifusayama when booking.
- The family-bath house next door opens at 6 p.m., ¥1,000 a room for an hour, bathing fee extra.
- Free parking, 5 minutes from the Hitoyoshi-Kuma smart interchange, and about 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport by car.
Getting there
From Kumamoto Sakuramachi bus terminal take the Sanko highway bus down the Kyushu Expressway to Hitoyoshi, about 1 hour 50 minutes by the city's count. The inn is in Nishiki, east of town; its access page gives about 15 minutes from Hitoyoshi Station by car or bus and notes that the JR Hisatsu line is partly closed. Drivers leave the expressway at the Hitoyoshi-Kuma smart interchange, 5 minutes away. The inn names no bus stop and no shuttle, so a taxi from the station is the simple way.
