Hitoyoshi Shinjo Onsen family baths
人吉神城温泉 家族風呂
Does Hitoyoshi Shinjo Onsen family baths allow tattoos? In a private bath
Shinjo Onsen is a house of twelve private bath rooms of umbrella pine and cypress beside Shinjo no Yado, rented by the hour in the evening to anyone who drives out from Hitoyoshi.
The operator publishes no tattoo rule. There is no shared bath here at all: the house is twelve private bath rooms rented by the hour, so a tattooed visitor bathes alone or with their own party.
The bath
The bath house draws the same Hitoyoshi Shinjo spring as the inn beside it: water from 1,000 meters down at 53.8°C, used as it comes and flowing through, which the operator says keeps the rooms clean. It is a sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring, weakly alkaline, that the operator calls a beauty bath for its moisturizing and cleansing feel and lists for neuralgia, muscle pain, chills, fatigue, cuts and burns; the temperature at the head is given as 50.9°C.
There is no shared hall. The house is twelve private family-bath rooms in two groups, Matsu (pine) and Kusu (camphor), each with rooms finished in koyamaki (umbrella pine) and rooms in hinoki (cypress) with the live knots left in, so the wood scents the steam. The photos show sunken stone tubs with walls of flagstone or river stone and a window. The house opens 6 to 10 p.m. and closes at 11, every day of the year.
A room costs ¥1,000 for 60 minutes for up to four people, ¥1,200 on weekends, holidays, New Year, Golden Week and Obon, plus a bathing fee of ¥300 for an adult, ¥200 for a schoolchild and ¥150 for a preschooler; a fifth or sixth person adds ¥200 each, and every extra 30 minutes is ¥500. The operator does not say whether rooms can be booked ahead, so arrive early or ask the inn.
The hotel
The bath house stands on the grounds of Shinjo no Yado inside the Shinjo Culture Forest, a complex of small museums and craft halls built by the local company Fujita, which began as a butcher's shop in 1966. It is a low wooden building in the same style as the inn, with cedar over 300 years old and koyamaki through the interiors. Admission is paid by the room and by the person: ¥1,000 a room for the hour (¥1,200 on busy dates) and ¥300 an adult on top. Guests of the inn may use it too, though their own rooms already have a spring bath.
