A family inn on the riverbank from 1976, with two hot spring baths that anyone staying can lock behind them, free and without a time limit, on water the house says reaches the tub with nothing added to it.

Kawakyu has two baths and no rule, because the two baths are locked from the inside by whoever is using them. The operator titles its own site with the phrase free private hot spring, and sells a dinner plan named after the private bath. Guests take either one whenever it is free, for as long as they like, at no charge, on water the house describes as running from the source with no water added.

Where it is

Hakata to Ibusuki is about 3 h 25: the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo, then the Ibusuki Makurazaki line down the coast, which the sightseeing train Ibusuki no Tamatebako also runs. Ureshino is about 1 h 20, a limited express to Takeo-Onsen and the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen one stop further. Founded in 1976 and run as a family house rather than a hotel, with four room types and no lavish furnishing. Check-in 15:00, check-out 10:00. The operator’s own domain stopped resolving before September 2026, so the site was read from the Internet Archive; reservations run through Booking.com, and the house keeps an active Instagram account. Dinner uses fish landed the same morning, so the menu changes daily.
