Does Hanayagi no Sho Keizan allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

With 116 rooms, Keizan is one of Isawa’s big houses, and 22 of those rooms have an open-air bath of their own, filled from a spring the inn owns.

Keizan refuses tattoos in its large baths and open-air baths, in writing. What it has in their place is volume: 22 of its 116 rooms come with a private open-air bath, and those rooms are sold as their own room types.

Isawa-Onsen STN
Everything here is reached from Tokyo. Karuizawa is an hour on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Echigo-Yuzawa 79 minutes on the Joetsu Shinkansen, both with no change. Kawaguchiko is the Fuji Excursion from Shinjuku, about two hours, and Isawa the Kaiji, an hour and forty. The Nagano towns change once: Bessho at Ueda, Nozawa at Iiyama, and Yudanaka, Hakuba and Myoko at Nagano.. Hanayagi no Sho Keizan · map data © OpenStreetMap contributors · open in Google Maps

JR Tokyo Wide Pass Covers the Kaiji from Shinjuku to Isawa-Onsen; the pass area runs as far as Kofu. Worth it if Kawaguchiko, Karuizawa or Echigo-Yuzawa is also on the trip. Sold on Klook.

What happens when you arrive

Skip the shared baths and reserve the private one the way this page describes. Once the door is closed, the bath is yours.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the hot spring page for the refusal; the room page for the count of open-air rooms)

Read on: keizan.com/room/

Best for: Picking from more open-air-bath rooms than any other inn in town

Rooms with an open-air bath: 15 Japanese-Western, 2 Japanese, 3 Western, and 2 special rooms that add a sauna. In the Shokyakuden open-air rooms and the Nagomi special room the open-air tub is the only bath. The inn’s own spring, free-flowing; the shared baths swap between men and women and have dry and mist saunas.
