Does Hatagoya Jozankei Shoten allow tattoos? In a private bath
Shoten asks tattooed guests to stay out of its large bath, so book one of its five log cottages, each with a hot-spring tub of its own. The spring comes out of the ground at 70–80°C (158–176°F), so staff half-fill the tub before you arrive to let it cool.

The bath
The five cottages, called Kazemachi Onsen Apartment, stand in the inn’s grounds. Each is a 45-square-meter log house with a hinoki (Japanese cypress) tub on hot-spring water. When you’re ready to bathe, turn the valve beside the tub and let in more spring water until it’s the temperature you like. The inn asks you not to add cold water, so the bath stays undiluted. Towels, shampoo, conditioner and body soap are in the cottage.
The large bath in the main building has an open-air bath, a sauna and a cold bath, open 4 p.m. to 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Its hot-spring water is diluted and recirculated. Cottage guests may use it, but it’s closed to tattooed bathers.
The hotel
Each cottage sleeps three, in two beds and a sofa bed, and has a sofa, a 50-inch TV, a microwave, a fridge, a kettle and a coffee machine. There are no cutlery or cooking utensils. Check in at the main building’s front desk; check-in is 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and checkout noon. Plans come with breakfast, and dinner plans add the yakiniku course Rokudan at the inn’s restaurant, Jozankei Seinikuten. Wi-Fi is free.
Good to know
- Guests must be 13 or older. The cottages and the main building take no younger children.
- Room supplies are minimal. Toothbrushes, combs, razors and skin care are at the front desk.
- Long stays are welcome. The inn offers the cottages for a night, a week or a month.
Getting there
Jozankei Onsen Higashi 2-chome STN · Jotetsu Bus Jozankei line
About 5 minutes on foot from the Jozankei Ohashi stop.
From New Chitose Airport, take the JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo, about 40 minutes. Change to the Namboku subway line for Makomanai, about 25 minutes, then take the Jotetsu bus to Jozankei, about 1 hour; the inn’s stop is Jozankei Ohashi. The Daiichi group’s free Yukemuri-go shuttle bus leaves Odori Nishi 5-chome, outside the Showa Building at exit 1 of Odori subway station, at 5 p.m. It leaves the inn for the return at 12:45 p.m. It runs by reservation only, and seats are limited.

What happens when you arrive
Check in at the front desk in the main building, then use the hinoki tub in your cottage. Skip the large bath.
