Does Jozankei Tsuruga Resort Spa Mori no Uta allow tattoos? In a private bath
Mori no Uta turns tattooed guests away from its large bath, so book one of its four cottages with an open-air hot-spring bath of their own. The tub sits on a wooden deck that opens straight off the living room, with the forest around it.
The hotel’s FAQ says guests with tattoos, stick-on tattoos included, can’t use the large bath.
The bath
Each of the four cottages has its own open-air bath on the deck. The tub is filled with free-flowing hot-spring water, heated to bathing temperature. The hotel adds a chlorine-based disinfectant to its water for hygiene. Bath towels, face towels, shampoo, conditioner and body soap are in the cottage.
The cottages are two-story maisonettes of 65 square meters, plus 12 square meters for the open-air bath. Two have a living room and a bedroom and sleep up to three. The other two have two twin bedrooms and sleep up to five.
The Jozankei spring is clear and mildly salty. The large bath has a bright indoor bath with a high ceiling, an open-air bath among the trees and a Finnish-style sauna with self-loyly, open 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Its water is recirculated, diluted and heated, and it’s closed to tattooed guests.
The hotel
Cottage check-in is 2 p.m. and checkout 11 a.m. Dinner is the buffet at Mori Buffet on the first floor, or a shabu-shabu course at the second-floor restaurant, Mori no Suana. There’s no in-room dining. Parking beside the hotel is free, and every room is non-smoking, with a cigar room on the first floor.
Good to know
- Wi-Fi can be patchy. The hotel says the signal is weak in some rooms.
- Room service is drinks only, 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Jozankei Onsen Higashi 2-chome STN · Jotetsu Bus Jozankei line
About 4 minutes on foot.
From New Chitose Airport, take the JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo, about 40 minutes. Change to the Namboku subway line for Makomanai, about 25 minutes, then take the Jotetsu bus to Jozankei, about 1 hour, and get off at Shiraito-no-Taki. The reservation-only Kappa Liner bus from Sapporo Station stops there too. The hotel’s free shuttle bus runs from Makomanai Station in about 30 minutes. It leaves from the stop by the green fence, 2 minutes on foot from the south exit, at 10:30 a.m. and at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Book it by phone by 5 p.m. the day before; it doesn’t run without a booking, and pets can’t ride.
