Does Amateras allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Amateras has no shared bath. Its four private open-air baths, each with an indoor tub and a warm spring-water pool deep enough to swim, are the only baths, and seven rooms add an open-air tub of their own.

The inn publishes no tattoo rule, and it has no large bath: its FAQ sends every guest to the four private open-air baths, each with an indoor tub and a warm spring-water pool, open 3 p.m. to midnight and 5 to 9:30 a.m. Seven rooms also have an open-air bath of their own.

The bath

The inn publishes no spring analysis; it says only that the baths and pools are filled with hot spring water. There is no large bath. The FAQ puts it in one line: the inn has no shared bath, use the private open-air baths.

Those are four outdoor private baths, each of a different design, and each pairs an indoor tub with an open-air tub and a private pool of spring water about 140 centimeters deep, wide enough for an adult to swim. The pools are kept at about 33°C in summer and 38°C in winter. From the open-air tubs you look at trees by day and, the inn says, at stars by night, with the valley falling away below. The baths are open 3 p.m. to midnight and again 5 to 9:30 a.m.; the pools run until midnight and from 5 a.m. The inn's pages give no price and no booking method for them, so ask at check-in.

Seven rooms carry an open-air bath of their own on the terrace. On a clear day the inn says the view runs to Sakurajima and Mount Kaimon, and from a room tub you take it in with nobody else around, at any hour.

The hotel

A couples' inn of 25 rooms run by Fuji Resort, each named for a constellation. Seven have their own open-air bath and three standard rooms are named on the rooms page. Dinner is a seasonal kaiseki (a multi-course Japanese meal) of Kagoshima ingredients, with black pork and black beef sukiyaki (beef simmered in sweet soy sauce), in a restaurant of private-style booths where window seats face the valley; breakfast is a Japanese set. Since March 20, 2025 some rooms take children of elementary age and under. There is no shuttle. Check-in 3 p.m., check-out 10:30 a.m.

Good to know

Getting there

The inn is built for drivers. From Kagoshima Airport it is about 30 minutes and 22 kilometers by car; the inn suggests a taxi or a rental car and runs no shuttle. From Kagoshima-Chuo Station it recommends the JR line and a local bus or a taxi, or a rental car, without naming a stop or giving minutes; the Kirishima Jingu access bus reaches the Maruo stop in the village below. The inn warns that car navigation systems may not find it by its phone number.
