Myoken Rakuenso
妙見楽園荘
Does Myoken Rakuenso allow tattoos? In a private bath
Myoken Rakuenso is a self-catering soaking inn where fourteen detached houses each have a kitchen and a hot spring tub that runs all day and night, with a valve to set your own temperature.
The inn publishes no tattoo rule. Fourteen of its units are detached houses with a hot spring bath of their own that runs 24 hours and a kitchen, so a guest with tattoos never needs the main building's shared bath, which also admits day visitors.
The bath
The spring is a sodium, calcium and magnesium bicarbonate water at 51.6°C and pH 6.7, and the inn lists neuralgia, muscle pain, arthritis, frozen shoulder, paralysis, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive complaints, hemorrhoids, cold sensitivity and convalescence for it. Nothing on the pages says it is diluted.
The main building has a large bath. Staying guests use it from 6 a.m. and day visitors from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a break for cleaning around 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.
The reason to come is the fourteen detached houses. Each has a hot spring bath of its own that flows 24 hours a day, with a valve at the tub so you set the temperature yourself and let it run. The photographs show plain rendered tubs with a thick stone rim crusted white by the minerals, an iron spout with a red wheel, and in some houses walls of pale cypress. Houses 305 to 309 stand beside the main building and 500 to 509 along the river. Because this is a soaking inn for self-caterers, there is nothing else to pay for and nobody else in your bath, morning or midnight.
The hotel
A soaking inn of twenty units: six rooms in the main building and fourteen detached houses, each house with a kitchen holding a microwave, fridge, rice cooker, cookware and dishes for four, free air conditioning, a kotatsu (a low heated table) in winter, a television and Wi-Fi. Rooms carry no amenities, as the inn says plainly in its FAQ: bring your own. A fish shop and a liquor shop are within walking distance, with the Nemunoki Chaya and Tengu Shokudo eateries nearby and supermarkets ten minutes away by car.
Good to know
- Set the tub yourself: the spring runs 24 hours with a valve for temperature.
- Bring towels and toiletries; the houses carry no amenities.
- Cross the Anraku bridge, not the old stone bridge the map apps pick.
- The Anraku-bashi bus stop is a minute's walk on the Myoken line between the airport and Hayato.
Getting there
From Kagoshima-Chuo Station take the JR Nippo Line to Hayato Station; the inn gives no train time and then counts about 20 minutes by car. The Anraku-bashi stop on the Myoken line bus is about a minute on foot, though the inn names no bus minutes. From Kagoshima Airport it is about 15 minutes by car, and about 15 minutes from the Mizobe interchange. The inn warns that map apps send drivers over an old stone bridge; use the Anraku bridge instead.
Hayato STN · JR Nippo Main Line (limited express Kirishima)
Not walkable.
Car about 20 minutes from Hayato Station; the Anraku-bashi stop on the Myoken line bus is a minute on foot.
