Tattoo friendly onsen in Kirishima

Kirishima is a mountain of inns built around the bath you do not share. Nobody in the spa villages publishes an open rule for a shared bath, but Koshikano Onsen answers the tattoo question with a yes because every room has its own bath, Miyama Hotel and Amateras have no shared bath at all and run every tub as a free private bath, Ryokojin Sanso books four open-air baths in the forest at no charge, and La Vista puts an open-air tub on each of its 105 rooms. Down the Amori river at Myoken, Ishiharaso lends a cypress bath by the half hour, Orihashi gives each of its twelve cottages an open-air and an indoor bath, and Gajoen’s thatched houses each have a tub.

Tattoos are fine in a private onsen, whether a bath you reserve or one in your room. The communal baths are restricted, or the policy is unconfirmed. What this means

Koshikano Onsen

美肌の湯 こしかの温泉

The inn answers the question in its own FAQ: yes, a guest with tattoos can bathe, because every room comes with its own bath and nobody else sees you. Day-use bathing and the family baths ended in November 2021, so the only tubs left are the ones inside the rooms and glamping units.

Kirishima Miyama Hotel

霧島みやまホテル

The hotel publishes no tattoo rule. Its answer is in the plumbing: all five tubs, two indoor and three open-air, are run as private baths, free for staying guests at any hour and as often as they like, so there is no shared bath at all. Day visitors get one tub to themselves for 50 minutes.

Best for: couples and families who want a whole open-air bath to themselves in the middle of Maruo without booking a slot

Five tubs, all private: the open-air Inukai-no-yu for about ten people, the roofed mountain-hut style open-air baths Todorogi-no-yu and Hanabusa-no-yu for about three each, and the indoor Kirishima-no-yu and Maruo-no-yu for about five each. The open-air baths stand a minute's walk from the building; the indoor ones are on the first floor. Guests use them free, any tub, any time, repeatedly, with no booking. One deluxe western room with a loft has a private bath of its own. Day use 800 yen for adults and 400 yen up to junior high age, reception 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., 50 minutes in one tub, guests given priority after 3 p.m. Check-in 3 to 8 p.m., check-out 10 a.m.; the desk takes cash and PayPay only. Traveler’s note

Yuyuan’s day-use bath refuses tattoos and body art in writing; the inn is listed for its rooms with an open-air tub and its private bath rooms, which carry no rule. Kirishima Hotel refuses tattoos and has no family bath, so it is not listed. Sakura Sakura’s free private bath is for guests only, from 4 to 9 p.m., and closes from December into spring. Miyama Hotel’s own pages say nothing about tattoos; it is here because none of its five baths is shared. Many of these inns publish no train time, so the minutes under the maps come from the operators that do.

Common questions

Kirishima questions

Can I use a shared bath in Kirishima with a tattoo?

No inn in the spa villages or at Myoken publishes a rule that allows it. Koshikano Onsen’s FAQ says yes to tattooed guests because every room bathes in its own tub, which is the same answer the rest of this page gives: a bath you have to yourself.

Which inns have no shared bath at all?

Kirishima Miyama Hotel runs all five of its tubs as free private baths, and Amateras has four private baths and nothing else. Koshikano Onsen, Yumotoan Kiyohime and Orihashi Ryokan give every room its own bath.

What is at Myoken, and how is it different from the villages up the mountain?

Myoken-Anraku is a string of old inns on the Amori river fifteen minutes from Kagoshima Airport, lower and warmer than Maruo. Ishiharaso lends its cypress bath Nanami-no-yu free in 30-minute slots, Nemu has rooms with an open-air bath, and Gajoen and Rakuenso keep the village feel. The Myoken line bus links it to Hayato Station and the airport.

How do I get to Kirishima from Hakata?

The Mizuho reaches Kagoshima-Chuo in about 1 hour 20 minutes. The Kirishima limited express runs up the Nippo line to Hayato in about 38 minutes, for Myoken and Hinatayama, and on to Kirishima-Jingu in about 50, where the Kagoshima Kotsu bus climbs to Maruo in under half an hour. Flying in is shorter: Kagoshima Airport’s bus reaches Myoken in about 15 minutes and Maruo in about 30.
