Does Candeo Hotels Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku allow tattoos? Yes!
A sky spa on top of the bath wing: the men’s open-air bath on its fourth floor under a frosted skylight, the women’s with a single-person pot bath, a dry sauna on one side and a mist sauna on the other.
No restrictions since May 24, 2023: abolished, not covered.
The bath
Both sides have an outdoor bath open to the breeze and a large indoor tub long enough to stretch out in. The men’s side adds a cold bath to go with the dry sauna, which the hotel says is set hot enough to sweat heavily and which won a special prize in Saunachelin 2020. The women’s mist sauna fills the room with fine vapor at a milder heat. None of the hotel’s pages calls the water a hot spring.
Shampoo and conditioner are Candeo’s own organic line, and the women’s powder room has cleansing oil, toner and milk lotion. There are no towels at the spa: bring the ones from your room. Children seven and over bathe on their own gender’s side, and children still in diapers can’t use it.
The saunas are off from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., while the baths themselves run 3 p.m. to 11 a.m.
The hotel
The lounge is a real Kyoto machiya (a traditional townhouse): the Ban family house, a kimono wholesaler’s home from 1896, registered as a tangible cultural property by the city. Upstairs on the Rokkaku-dori side is a 24-hour library with free coffee and tea; on the garden side, a tatami wine bar open 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Breakfast is a boxed obanzai (Kyoto home-style dishes) set eaten on tatami mats there. Two room types, Private Spa Twin and Private Spa King, have an open-air bath of their own.
Good to know
- Breakfast seats turn over every 45 minutes; choose your time at check-in, since it can’t be booked ahead.
- No stopping in front of the hotel, so taxis drop you nearby; tell the driver “Muromachi-dori sagaru, Rokkaku higashi-iru, minami-gawa”.

Karasuma-Oike STN · Karasuma and Tozai subway lines
About 3 minutes from exit 6.
Kyoto Station is on the Tokaido Shinkansen. Take the Karasuma subway line to Karasuma-Oike, leave by the south gate for exit 6, walk about 200 meters south, turn right at the Rokkaku-dori sign, and the hotel is 50 meters along on the left. There’s no parking or bicycle space.
