Does Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyoto Kawaramachi Jokyoji allow tattoos? Yes!
A second-floor bath the hotel describes as hushed and otherworldly, in a building that shares its street front with a working temple’s main hall.

The bath
Both sides are dark rooms in black tile and stone, and at the head of each tub is a lit wall panel of brushed calligraphic art in handmade washi paper by Kami Asakura of Kanazawa: on the men’s side it expresses mujo, impermanence, and on the women’s side rinne, the cycle of rebirth. In the middle of the room stands a stone basin modeled on the chozubachi at which worshippers rinse their hands at a temple gate, and soft music plays. The hotel names no hot spring and lists no sauna.
Shower heads and hair dryers on both sides are ReFa, fitted in 2024. The women’s changing room is finished in wood, with separate powder booths. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, basic skin care, cotton swabs, a water server and a scale are provided; towels come from your room, and room nightwear and slippers are fine.
Free to guests, 3 p.m. to 10 a.m. the next morning.
The hotel
Jokyoji is a Jodo-shu temple under Chion-in, founded around 1171 by Taira no Shigemori, and its main hall stands at the front of the hotel. On dates the hotel posts on its home page, guests can join the morning service in the hall at 6:50 a.m. (¥1,500, free under 18), then look around the hall until about 7:40 a.m. for free; sign up at the front desk on check-in. Breakfast at Sanga Ono Kyoto Jokyoji is a choice of main dish with a half buffet, ¥3,300.

From Kyoto Station, city buses 4, 5 and 205 reach Shijo Kawaramachi in about 15 minutes, then it’s 5 minutes on foot. Keihan Gion-Shijo Station is 7 minutes away and the Karasuma subway’s Shijo Station 10.
