Does Takuhide allow tattoos? In a private bath
Ask for Matsushima and nothing else: it is the one room at this inn with its own open-air bath cut into the ground floor, fed straight from the spring, and the only water on the property nobody else will step into.
Takuhide publishes no tattoo rule for its five shared baths, and one of those baths is mixed and closed to men, which tells you the house thinks about who sees whom without ever reaching the question we care about. The answer here is a single room. Matsushima, the special room on the ground floor of the main building, has the inn’s only room-side open-air bath, free-flowing from the source, plus an indoor tub of its own.

Best for: One room in the valley where the open-air bath is yours for the night and nobody else uses it
Book Matsushima specifically; it is a single room and the rest of the house has no private bath. Its open-air tub has no washing area, and the indoor tub is not free-flowing, so you adjust the temperature yourself with cold water. A wooden deck was added in the last refit. The shared baths are Tsuru-no-yu, Kame-no-yu, Ishibashi-no-yu, Shakuyaku-no-yu and Chosei-no-yu, the middle two swapping between men and women by the hour, and there is a mixed open-air bath that men are not allowed to use. The water is strongly alkaline at pH 9.1 to 9.3, the slippery unagi-yu Nakayamadaira is known for. Fourteen rooms.
