FOURTREAT plus NASUKOGEN
フォートリート+那須高原
Does FOURTREAT plus NASUKOGEN allow tattoos? Yes, covered
FOURTREAT plus admits a tattoo that two of its own seals, 10 cm × 15 cm (3.9 × 5.9 in) each and sold at the desk for ¥250 apiece, can cover; its open-air bath runs on the Shika-no-yu source.
The rule is the Relo Hotels & Resorts group FAQ. A tattoo may go into the baths if two of the hotel’s own seals, 10 cm × 15 cm (3.9 × 5.9 in) each, can cover it, and the front desk sells them for ¥250 apiece. The same rule covers the sauna and the open-air bath.

The bath
The open-air bath runs on the Shika-no-yu source, the oldest spring in Tochigi, which the hotel says has been used for 1,300 years. It is a simple acid sulfur spring of the hydrogen sulfide type, pH 2.36, 53.7°C at the source, milky white and slightly thick to the touch; the hotel says it leaves the skin smooth. Its own table says the water is diluted, heated and flows through rather than recirculating. The list of conditions it is said to help is long: chronic joint and muscle pain, cold sensitivity, poor circulation, mild high blood pressure, diabetes, hemorrhoids, stress and fatigue among them.
The indoor large bath is not spring water, the page says plainly. Both the open-air tub and the indoor hall are open 5 to 10 a.m. and noon to midnight, and on cleaning days the afternoon session starts at 3 p.m. There is no day-use bathing and no private bath. A bathing tax of ¥150 is charged from age 12, and children of 7 and over must use the bath of their own sex. Women can book a 30-minute steam spa for ¥2,000 at check-in. Shampoo and towels are in the room; the changing rooms add cotton swabs and brushes.
The hotel
A Relo Hotels and Resorts property under the FOURTREAT brand, which it explains as rest, recreation, relaxation and retreatment, aimed at adult travelers. It has 38 rooms in four types: Deluxe twins of 42 square meters with a tatami sitting area, standard twins and Natural Light twins of 32 square meters, and Natural Light Japanese-western rooms for five; every room has a unit bath. The lounge looks across the Kanto Plain, serves wine and finger food from 3 to 6 p.m. and plays records after 6, with a library of 200 books. Dinner is a French-style course from three menus, breakfast a buffet with the local Nasu Goyoran eggs. Check-in 3 p.m., check-out 10 a.m.

Best for: a mid-size tattoo and a cloudy Shika-no-yu sulfur soak with a view
Formerly the Nasu Kogen Hotel View Palace. The open-air bath runs on the Shika-no-yu source, flowing through. The group FAQ says guests who refuse the seals may be turned away.
