The bath

The water is a simple sulfur spring of the hydrogen sulfide type, milky white, which the hotel lists for rheumatic conditions, chronic poisoning, diabetes and movement disorders. The baths are in the hotel wing. The fourth-floor hall has the large bath, a sauna and a jacuzzi; the fifth-floor hall has the large bath and a rock bath. The two swap daily: women take the fourth floor on odd dates and men on even, and the other way round upstairs. Both look out through a wall of windows at the Nasu highland, and the top page adds an open-air bath. Hours are 6 to 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to midnight. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap and dryers are provided.

Day visitors can bathe 2 to 6 p.m. (last entry 5 p.m.) for ¥1,400, children ¥700, though the hotel suspends it when the house is busy. Under Tochigi rules only preschoolers may bathe with the other sex, and the hotel adds that children over 120 cm tall may not. No private bath is listed, and cottage guests walk across to the hotel wing to bathe.

The hotel

A Laforet Hotels and Resorts property on quiet land next to the Nasu Imperial villa, with a hotel wing and cottages. The wing has economy twins on the second and third floors, standard western, Japanese (10 mats) and Japanese-western rooms, two deluxe rooms on the top sixth floor and one special twin. Eight Forest Cottages of about 75 square meters have terraces and sleep five or six, four of them with loft beds; separate cottages take dogs. Dinner is in the restaurant, with a course called Miyabi on the cottage plans, built on highland vegetables and local food. Towels and yukata (a light cotton robe) are in the room; toothbrushes, razors and shower caps are sold.

Getting there

Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Nasushiobara Station (1 hour 8 minutes from Tokyo on the Yamabiko). The hotel's free shuttle leaves the West Exit rotary at 11:40 a.m. and 3:40 p.m., takes about 40 minutes and must be booked by phone; it returns at 10:10 a.m. and 2:15 p.m., and the times can change with the train timetable. By car, leave the Tohoku Expressway at Nasu and follow the Nasu Kaido (Route 17) about 10 km, around 15 minutes; carry chains in winter.

How we know

Confirmed from official site (the note on the hotel’s hot spring page)

Best for: a small tattoo, a milky sulfur bath and a room or cottage at a moderate price

The page doesn’t say whether the front desk sells seals. The bath is in the hotel building; guests in the cottages walk over to it.
