Does Hida Hotel Plaza allow tattoos? In a private bath
Hida Hotel Plaza refuses tattoos in its rooftop and tatami-floored large baths, but its special room Yuzan Kosho has a private tub filled from the hotel's own Hiten-no-yu spring.
Refused in the shared baths: the hotel's FAQ turns away guests with tattoos from its large baths, and it has no family or private bath to book. The one way to bathe in its spring with a tattoo is to stay in the special Western room Yuzan Kosho, which has its own hot-spring bath. Ordinary rooms have a plain bathtub.
The bath
Yuzan Kosho is the only room here with spring water. Its bath stands in a dark-tiled bathing room off the bedroom: a square tub with a spout at the back, a timber deck and a chair beside it. The hotel describes it as a place to have the spring to yourself, with nobody else's timetable to keep. The room measures 50 square meters, sleeps up to three, and is fitted with Hida furniture and craft work.
The spring is the hotel's own, called Hiten-no-yu, a clear sodium chloride spring with a little salt that the hotel says warms the body well. It comes up cool, so the hotel heats it, adds no water, and circulates it through filters. It is listed for nerve, muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, poor circulation and fatigue.
The two shared halls are closed to tattooed guests. The sky bath on the ninth floor of the Kita-kan wing has a large bath, a mist sauna, an open-air bath and, up a flight of stairs, cypress and ceramic pot tubs, open from 6 a.m. to midnight. Mokko-no-yu, in the basement of the Higashi-kan wing, has a tatami floor, a cold plunge and a dry sauna, open from 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.
The hotel
The hotel has 217 rooms for up to 738 guests, all non-smoking, in Japanese, Japanese-Western and Western styles. Its designer rooms are furnished by the Takayama makers Hida Sangyo and Oak Village. Dinner is served in two Japanese restaurants or a Western and Chinese restaurant, never in the room, and breakfast is a buffet of local and Western dishes. A cafe lounge sells drinks and light meals. Check-in is from 3 p.m. and check-out by 10 a.m. The outdoor lot beside the hotel holds 100 cars and is free for staying guests.
Good to know
- Book Yuzan Kosho by name. No other room type has a hot-spring bath, and the hotel has no private bath to reserve.
- The station is 5 minutes away on foot, and the hotel runs no shuttle.
- Robes here are jinbei, a two-piece top and shorts in place of a yukata (a light cotton robe), with sizes swapped at the front desk.
Getting there
From Nagoya Station the JR Hida limited express reaches Takayama Station in about 2 hours 30 minutes, by the hotel's count. Leave the ticket gate to the right for the Norikura (east) exit, ride the escalator down and walk straight ahead. Cross at the crosswalk, turn left and follow the road for 500 meters; the hotel is on the right after about 5 minutes. There is no shuttle. Taxis wait at the Norikura exit.
Takayama STN · JR Takayama Main Line
About 5 minutes from the east exit, 500 meters along one road.
No shuttle; taxi stand at the east exit.

What happens when you arrive
Use the bath in your room, or reserve a private bath.
How we know
Confirmed from official site (the FAQ page states the refusal and the lack of a private bath; the rooms pages list the special room with its own hot-spring bath)
妊娠、体調不良や体質上の自覚症状、アルコール等を飲酒されたり、刺青等をされている方は、ご利用をお断りしております。
This is the rule for the shared baths. It doesn’t apply to the private baths.
Best for: a room with its own spring-fed bath in a large hotel close to the station, for guests who accept that the shared baths are closed to them
Yuzan Kosho is a 50 square meter Western room for up to three guests, with its own bath of the hotel's Hiten-no-yu spring and a dinner prepared for three parties a day. The hotel says it built the room because guests kept asking whether room baths were hot spring water and whether there was a private bath. The FAQ says spring water is otherwise supplied only to the two large baths. No day-use bathing.
