Does Machiyado Ichiryu allow tattoos? In a private bath

Private bath only

Machiyado Ichiryu chose to build no large bath: its 11 rooms share three private baths fed by Hida Takayama Onsen, and each room adds a half-open-air tub of its own.

Machiyado Ichiryu has no shared bath at all, and it publishes no tattoo rule. Every bath in the house is taken alone: two private hot spring baths that are free whenever they stand empty, a third that is reserved for a fee, and a half-open-air tub in each of the 11 rooms.

The bath

The water is Hida Takayama Onsen, a simple spring the inn classes as hypotonic, weakly alkaline and low in temperature. The inn calls it mild water known for leaving skin smooth, and lists it for chronic muscle and joint pain, poor circulation, sleeplessness, stress and fatigue.

There is no large bath. In its place the ground floor has three private baths, open 3 p.m. to midnight and 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Iwafune and Araki cost nothing and take no booking: you check from your room whether one is empty and walk in. Miyagawa, which the inn calls its premium bath, is reserved. A turn runs 45 minutes from the top of the hour and costs ¥4,400, booked in advance or at the front desk on the day. Its tub measures 2,215 by 1,815 millimeters.

All 11 rooms have a wide half-open-air bath, each finished differently. Those room tubs are filled with ordinary heated water, not the spring, so the spring is found only in the three baths downstairs. Rooms come with bathrobes, yukata, a work-style lounging suit and a basket for carrying your things to the bath.

The hotel

The house was Ryokan Seiryu, a Hida beef inn more than 50 years old. After a year of rebuilding it reopened on November 2, 2024 as Machiyado Ichiryu, run by Frontier Kanko. It has 11 rooms for 41 guests, six of them suites, and every room is at least 40 square meters; the largest suite is 100. Meals are served in private rooms in a separate dining house across the street, built around Hida beef. Two lounges on the 2nd floor are free to all guests, with local sake, beer and snacks from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and wine and spirits from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Check-in is 3 p.m., check-out 11 a.m.

Good to know

Getting there

From Nagoya Station take the JR Hida limited express on the Takayama Main Line to Takayama Station; the inn counts about 2 hours 30 minutes from Nagoya to its door. From Osaka it suggests the Shinkansen to Nagoya and the Hida from there, about 3 hours 40 minutes. The inn is 7 minutes on foot from Takayama Station and names no exit. It offers no shuttle. Drivers stop at the entrance first, then park.

What happens when you arrive

There's no shared bath here, so every bath you use is private. Reserve one at the front desk.

How we know

Bath layout confirmed, tattoo policy not published Checked on the official site (: the hot spring page says there is no large bath, lists three private baths and says every room has a half-open-air bath)

Best for: an inn with no shared bath, where two private hot spring baths are free

The three private baths use Hida Takayama Onsen and open 3 p.m. to midnight and 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Iwafune and Araki are free and need no booking; a screen in the room shows whether they are empty. The premium bath Miyagawa costs ¥4,400 for 45 minutes from the top of each hour, booked ahead or at the front desk on the day. The half-open-air tubs in the rooms are not hot spring water; the inn says so on its hot spring page. Children of elementary school age and younger are not accepted. Parking is ¥1,500 a night.
