Does Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama Musubi no Yu allow tattoos? In a private bath
Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama Musubi no Yu put three private open-air baths named Tea, Ink and Forest on its 9th floor, above garden large baths of Hida Takayama Onsen water.
Tokyu Stay Hida Takayama publishes no tattoo rule for its large baths. A tattooed guest can book one of the three private open-air baths on the top floor instead, each ¥2,750 for 45 minutes and fed by the same hot spring. They are booked at the front desk on the day of the stay, first come.
The bath
All the baths draw on Hida Takayama Onsen, a sodium bicarbonate and chloride spring that the hotel classes as weakly alkaline and low in temperature. It lists the water for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, recovery after illness and fatigue.
The three private open-air baths are on the 9th floor, the top of the building. Each has its own design and name: Cha, Sumi and Mori, meaning tea, ink and forest. A turn is 45 minutes and costs ¥2,750 for the bath, not per person. They open from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., and the last turn is booked at 10 p.m. The hotel takes bookings only on the day you stay, in person at the front desk, in the order guests ask, so ask at check-in.
The two large baths are on the 2nd floor and face a Japanese garden. Hinoki-no-yu is built of cypress; Hyotan-no-yu, the gourd bath, has a jet-black tub. They change between men and women, and open 3 p.m. to midnight and 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. A cypress foot bath on the 9th floor, deep enough to reach the calves, runs 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.; bring a towel from your room.
The hotel
This is the Tokyu Stay chain's Takayama hotel, with the front desk on the 1st floor, baths and restaurant on the 2nd, rooms on floors 3 to 8 and a lounge on the 9th that looks over the town to the Northern Alps. Even floors are themed Classic and odd floors Modern, and each has a small gallery of a local craft. Rooms are twins, doubles, Japanese-Western rooms and long-stay rooms with a mini kitchen; most have a washer-dryer and a microwave. The restaurant Yui serves a breakfast buffet for ¥2,500 and a dinner with Hida beef. There is no curfew.
