Oyado Koto no Yume

おやど 古都の夢

Does Oyado Koto no Yume allow tattoos? Yes!

Nothing to cover

Oyado Koto no Yume, two minutes from Takayama Station, says in its own FAQ that guests with tattoos may bathe in its hot spring baths, a granite indoor tub and a rock open-air tub on each side.

Koto no Yume answers the question in its own FAQ: because many of its guests come from abroad, guests with tattoos may use the baths. It asks for no cover seal. The baths are for staying guests only, so there is no day visit. Swimsuits and wrapped towels are not allowed in the water.

The bath

The large baths run on Hida Takayama Onsen, a simple spring the inn classes as weakly alkaline, hypotonic and low in temperature. It keeps the water at 40 degrees C in summer and 41 to 41.5 degrees in winter, and lists it for neuralgia, muscle and joint pain, stiff shoulders, poor circulation and fatigue. Each side has an indoor tub of granite and, through a door, the open-air rock bath Iwa-no-yu, lit by a lamp. The women's side is called Hana-no-ka. Hours are 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. The two sides do not swap, and nobody may bathe before check-in or after check-out.

The changing rooms have free lockers with keys, shampoo, body soap, razors, hair dryers and skin lotion. Bath towels are in the closet of your room, so carry one down.

The private bath Hoshi-no-yu is on the 5th floor, with its own changing room and a single shower. Its water is heated tap water, not the spring. A turn costs ¥3,300 for up to three adults or ¥4,400 for four; children up to 12 are free. Turns start on the hour from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Book ahead or at the front desk. A booking dropped after 3 p.m. on the day is charged in full.

The hotel

The inn has 29 rooms for 80 guests in a building modeled on a traditional Takayama town house, with a hearth and exposed beams in the lobby. Every room is decorated differently: a special room with an 11-mat main room and a queen bed, a junior suite, family rooms with two beds and two futons, a single twin on the top floor, 10-mat and 8-mat Japanese rooms, and a two-person Japanese room that shares a bathroom. Meals are served in the dining room Kagura. Guests can borrow colored yukata (a light cotton robe), men's included, and aroma oils in the lobby. Check-in is 3 p.m., check-out 10 a.m.

Best for: a tattoo-open hot spring bath two minutes from Takayama Station

The private bath Hoshi-no-yu on the 5th floor is not hot spring water: the inn says it is heated tap water. It costs ¥3,300 a turn for up to three adults and ¥4,400 for four, with turns on the hour from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., booked ahead or at the front desk, staying guests only. The room bathrooms are not hot spring water either, and no room has an open-air tub. The large baths open 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and do not swap sides. Curfew is 11 p.m.
